An attempt has been made to understand Obesity through Ayurveda and modern point of view and solutions to treat it with the help of Ayurveda. INTRODUCTION OF OBESITY

Obesity is a serious condition defined by an excess fat in the body. It is the condition in which the body fat reaches an abnormal level. It is the condition which leads to certain medical problems and social difficulties for people. A person is said to be obese if his or her BMI is beyond 30. Obesity can lead to many health issues like diabetes, Hypertension, gallstones, gastro – oesophageal reflux disease, as well as psychological problems. According to ayurveda kapha prakriti people are likely to be more prone to obesity. It is a serious health issue of 21th century, the prevalence is increasing in developed and developing countries because of rapid industrialization jobs are becoming sedentary which is responsible for reduction in physical activity.

In ayurveda, obesity is introduced as” sthoulya “. It is the predisposing stage earlier to medoroga. Obesity occurs when the kapha dosha is aggravated in the body. It is the santarpana janya vyadhi. our body is made up of seven dhatus. These dhatus are rasa, rakta, maans, meda, asthi, majjha, and shukra. From these dhatus one of the dhatu Meda is nourished in excessive amounts and other dhatus are not well nourished, line of treatment described in ayurveda for obesity is shamana and the shodhana chikitsa. In shamana chikitsa langhan is one of the treatments which is done. There is a test which helps in diagnosing it, i.e. Tilt table test in which a patient is asked to lie down on the flat table and strapped so that they don’t fall when the table is tilted. Then the slow table is moved in an upright position and the heart rate is monitored by the doctor. People having POTS may even faint while taking tests. However, further other tests can be done to confirm the diagnosis.
