Mesalamine Its Use In Ulcerative Colitis And Treatment With Ayurveda

Abstract

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the colon. Bacterias such as E.Coli, Campylobacter, Shigella, Yersinia, and salmonella affect the innermost layer of the colon. Anti-inflammatory drugs are the first line of drugs for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Due to various side effects associated with the drugs Ayurveda plays a vital role in managing and preventing ulcerative colitis without any side effects. Let’s have a look!!!

Ulcerative Colitis

Introduction

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in your digestive tract. UC affects the innermost lining of the large intestine, also called the colon and rectum. Bacteria that cause colitis include E. Coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia, and Shigella. Other body organs may be impacted by the toxins that the bacteria can create or by the illness itself. Our digestive system, often known as “Agni,” performs a number of tasks including digestion, nutritional absorption, and assimilation of food particles. When this Agni isn’t functioning properly, food particles are improperly or insufficiently digested, which frequently results in an accumulation of AMA (toxins), which the body absorbs and stores. The release of different digestive juices is impacted by the accumulated AMA, which results in a compromised digestive metabolism. It mainly targets people in the 15-30 age group and then again at 50-70. It can be detected by medical tests which include blood tests, stool tests, and endoscopy of the large intestine.

There are four types of ulcerative colitis i.e.

  • Ulcerative Proctitis
  • Proctosigmoiditis
  • Left-sided Colitis
  • Pan-ulcerative colitis

Symptoms of ulcerative colitis

  •  Abdominal pain and cramping
  •  Blood and pus in stools
  •  Loss of appetite
  •  Diarrhea
  •  Tenesmus
  •  Anaemia

The first-line treatment for ulcerative colitis is anti-inflammatory drugs. Mesacol/ Mesalamine belongs to the class of aminosalicylate and is used to treat ulcerative colitis. The other treatment options for UC are immunosuppressants, biologics, surgery, and others (Anti-diarrheal, pain relievers, antispasmodics, and iron supplements). Mesacol functions by reducing the generation of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that lead to intestinal inflammation and edema. It reduces stomach pain, bleeding, and ulcers. It is used for mildly to moderately severe diseases. It is taken by mouth and rectally. It comes in a delayed-release and extended-release dosage forms.

But according to Ayurvedic philosophy, an unbalanced dosha can cause the interruption of the life energy (prana), which can cause digestive issues and build-up waste. Pitta pradhan Vata doshas, an imbalance between pitta and vata in which vata is heightened by pungent and bitter flavors, are regarded to be the disease-causing factor in ulcerative colitis.

According to Ayurveda, this digestive problem is primarily brought on by a regular intake of imprudent food (spicy, oily, frozen food), an unsupportable lifestyle (lack of exercise, sleep, etc.), Roga (infections), and Vyadhikshamatva (low immunity). These factors together weaken the Pachak Pitta (digestive fire), which in turn leads to this problem.

Factors that cause ulcerative colitis include

  • Excessive sun exposure or heat
  • Alcohol intake and excessive smoking
  • Stress
  • Eating infected, stale, and rancid food
  • Improper eating habits

Agni Deepana (improving appetite), Ama Pachana (measure to digest the Ama), and strengthening graham (gastrointestinal system) are the basic treatment lines followed by Ayurveda.
