Abstract

Polymyalgia Rheumatica is an inflammatory disease. Inflammatory disorders are when the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues that result in inflammation. Inflammation is the normal response of the body to illness and infections. This process is part of the body’s defense mechanism and plays a role in the healing process in the body. But when the immune system attacks healthy tissue then this is called autoimmune inflammatory conditions. Sometimes our body mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells and this will lead to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. But in this article, we will discuss one inflammatory condition that is Polymyalgia rheumatica, and its Ayurvedic management.

Introduction

Polymyalgia rheumatica is an inflammatory disease. It is characterized by muscle pain and stiffness in various parts of the body. This is a common cause of aching and stiffness in the body. This usually affects the neck, shoulder, hips. In this disease, the pain can be very sudden and occur gradually over a period. In Polymyalgia rheumatica, people wake up in the morning with pain and stiffness in the muscles. This condition is also related to another inflammatory condition that is giant cell arteritis. This is also called Temporal arteritis. It is common that a person with Polymyalgia rheumatica can develop this giant cell arteritis together. The pain and stiffness can result in depression.

Etiology/Causes

The exact cause of this disease is not known. Two factors that are genetic and environmental play a role in developing this disease. This pain and stiffness is the result of inflammatory cells and proteins that normally occur during the defense mechanism. Infectious diseases also contribute to developing this disease. Some theories have included that viruses disturbed the immune system in genetically susceptible individuals. The involved virus thought to be developing this disease is Adenovirus.
