Frozen shoulder rarely occurs again but may occur on the other side shoulder with time. This condition is mainly found in females than males and mostly in the age group of 40 years and above. In this article, we will discuss causes, symptoms, and ayurvedic treatment for frozen shoulders.

Frozen Shoulder

Introduction

A frozen shoulder is characterized by pain and stiffness of the shoulder joint. It is also called adhesive capsulitis. People with associated diseases like diabetes and heart problems are at risk of developing a Frozen shoulder. The capsule of the shoulder thickens and becomes stiff. In some cases, synovial fluid also becomes less. This leads to restriction in the movement of the shoulder and pain in the joint. This can occur because of injury, overuse of the shoulder, immobilization of the shoulder, and pathological causes. Frozen shoulders may come and go away slowly within 12 to 24 months.

The three stages of a frozen shoulder are

  • Freezing stage – pain without stiffness
  • Frozen stage – pain with stiffness
  • Thawing stage – improve in condition

Ayurvedic Aspect

According to Ayurveda, Frozen shoulder is correlated to Apabahuka. Apabahuka occurs due to the vitiation of Vata dosha along with Kapha dosha. Pain in the joint indicated the involvement of Vata dosha alone while pain along with stiffness in the joints indicated the involvement of Vata dosha along with Kapha dosha anubandh. All its symptoms are the same as explained for the Frozen shoulder. Various treatment modalities are used to manage this condition which is explained in detail further in the article.

  • Stiffness in joint
  • Stiffness in muscles
  • Difficulty in moving shoulder
  • In some people, the pain worsens at night and may interfere with sleep patterns.

Diagnosis

History, symptoms, and physical examination (by checking pain and stiffness level) are enough to make the diagnosis, but your doctor can suggest some screening tests to rule out the exact cause

  • X-ray
  • MRI scan

Treatment

The frozen shoulder gets better with time and goes on its own within 1 to 2 years or more in some cases. Treatment offered to patients is

  • Analgesics
  • Steroids

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation is a procedure to reduce pain in frozen shoulder patients. It is a minimally invasive treatment and is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. In addition to improving pain, there can be an improved range of motion of the shoulder after Radiofrequency Ablation.

Ayurvedic Management of Lyme Disease ( infectious bacterial disease )

Abstract

Lyme disease is an infectious bacterial disease spread by ticks. The ticks live on animals such as deer, cows, horses, etc. The ticks are black legged and are small enough to be immediately pointed out by naked eye. The major symptoms of Lyme disease are rashes, fever, malaise, fatigue, joint pain, etc. Lyme disease can be resolved in a few weeks but care has to be taken even after that because it leaves behind the joint pain and bone weakness. This article features safe and natural herbal remedies that will help the disease resolve faster and the symptoms also improve, along with helping prevent joint inflammation.

Introduction

Lyme disease is named after the town Lyme in the United States. Lyme disease is the most common bacterial infection carried by ticks in the world. These ticks can be present anywhere on animals and also wander on trees and grass, especially where vegetation is even mildly dense. Lyme disease often confuses the natural immune and nervous mechanisms of the body; therefore, it requires to be taken more seriously than other bacterial infections. The ticks that carry the bacteria that cause Lyme disease are too small to be noticed while they bite you. The tick remains attached for one to two days and it swells up during this time, so it should be removed as soon as possible so that you can prevent the spread of the bacteria into the bloodstream.

People with Lyme disease are usually given full courses of antibiotics, which can be oral as well as intravenous. But these bacteria that cause Lyme disease are quite stubborn and penetrate the dhatus i.e. deepest levels of tissues in the body. Antibiotics cannot reach these levels. There they alter their genetic composition and cause the immunity to further decrease, and disturb various parameters of the blood, such as:

  • Decreased leukocytes
  • Increased mean corpuscular volume
  • Increased fasting glucose
  • Increased LDL cholesterol

Along with the above, another problem with antibiotic treatment of Lyme disease is that it may leave the person with other new infectious microbes such as Bartonella, lungworms, molds, viruses, ehrlichia, babesia, mycoplasma and coxiella, etc.

Lyme disease

Symptoms also keep reappearing

  • Rash at the site of bite.
  • Irritation and redness.
  • The rash becomes bigger and harder.
  • The rash will have the diameter of around 10 inches.
  • More than one rash may be there.
  • Itching and pain.
  • Fever and chills.
  • Weakness and dizziness.
  • Fatigue and body ache.
  • Stiffness in the limbs.
  • Unable to move specific muscles of the face.
  • Pain in the eyes.
  • Feeling of warmth or heat flush in the face.
  • Fatigue gets severe.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Shakiness and tremor.
  • Toes become cold.

Causes

Various factors contribute to the development of any condition in an individual. In case of infectious vector borne diseases, being bitten by the vector causes illness. In order to get infected with Lyme disease it is required to be bitten by ticks that carry the infectious bacteria.

  • Being bitten by ticks that carry the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, Borrelia afzelii, Borrelia garinii or Borrelia mayonii.
  • Being close to such an animal that is carrying ticks as well as the Borrelia bacteria.

Risk factors

Some factors decide the severity and susceptibility of a condition affecting a particular individual. In case of Lyme disease, those factors are

  • Being close to deer, horses or cows: if you or your kids go horse riding or encounter and pat stray cows and goats, you might get those black legged ticks.
  • Walking barefoot in the grass: some infected ticks may have fallen in the grass where your children play.
  • Having pets at home and leaving them to wander here and there: if you leave your pets to go for a walk on their own, they might catch those ticks which carry the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Ticks should be removed from pets every day.

Diagnosis

The doctor shall first investigate the history of your activities in the past week, to know if you could have been bitten by the tick that carries Lyme disease. Antibody test that detects antibodies developed in response to the bacteria can be done. If antibodies are found then a confirmatory test is done. Usually antibiotic medication courses are given to people having Lyme disease.

Complications

If the infection takes long to resolve, and even after the infection has resolved, the following complications may arise and never get relieved, termed as post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome

  • Chronic joint pains: the joints are badly affected with Lyme disease, just like in chikungunya.
  • Chronic fatigue: the person may be left with lifelong susceptibility to get fatigued sooner.
  • Arrhythmia: irregular heart beat may be observed (or not observed) even after relief from the actual ongoing infection.

Sometimes, the antibiotic used in a Lyme disease infection can further reduce your white blood cell count and also cause diarrhea. Other organisms may also develop in the body after the antibiotic course. Therefore, herbal management is recommended.
