SHLIPADARI LOHA – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages
ABSTRACT
In contemporary lymphology and tropical medicine, chronic lymphatic filariasis, lower-limb lymphedema, and associated localized tissue hypertrophy present complex management challenges. Conventional treatment primarily centers on antiparasitic chemotherapy and compression therapies, which manage active microfilarial loads and fluid stasis but often leave underlying chronic tissue fibrosis, severe stasis-induced inflammation, and lymphatic enlargement unaddressed.
Ayurveda conceptualizes these progressive swelling disorders primarily as Shlipada (elephantiasis), a condition driven by deep-seated Kapha and Vata vitiation impairing the Rasa (circulating fluid) and Rakta (blood) tissue pathways (Srotas). Over time, this chronic stagnation leads to induration, limb enlargement, and severe structural deformity.
Shlipadari Loha is a classical herbo-mineral formulation specifically engineered to break down chronic lymphatic blockages and reduce soft-tissue hypertrophy. By integrating a potent Loha-Bhasma (processed iron) core with Triphala and purified Shilajit, it enhances tissue metabolism, clears sluggish channels, and gradually resolves both newly developed and long-standing elephantiasis.
INTRODUCTION
Shlipadari Loha is an authoritative classical herbo-mineral formulation indicated for the management of acute and chronic elephantiasis (Shlipada), persistent lymphedema, and lymphatic induration. It belongs to the Loha Kalpa (iron-based preparations) branch of Rasashastra, utilizing calcined iron Bhasmas combined with potent herbal anti-inflammatory and scrapers (Lekhana drugs).
The therapeutic efficacy of Shlipadari Loha lies in its ability to penetrate deep tissue layers (Dhatus) and clear chronic lymphatic blockages (Srotorodha). Formulated with equal parts of Triphala, Mandura Bhasma, Kanta Loha Bhasma, and Shilajit, and systematically triturated (Mardana) for seven consecutive days with Triphala Kwatha (decoction), this medicine acts as a powerful channel cleaver, anti-edematous agent, metabolic regulator, and tissue rejuvenator.
CLASSICAL INDICATION
Shlipada (Elephantiasis, chronic lymphatic filariasis, and lymphedema—both freshly developed (Naveen) and long-standing/chronic (Purana)).

INGREDIENT DESCRIPTION
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)
Serves as a potent Anulomana (carminative and channel-clearing) herb with strong astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. It aids in scraping away accumulated metabolic toxins (Ama) from the lymphatic channels and normalizes Vata movement.
Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica)
It exerts a dominant Kapha-pacifying and dry (Ruksha) effect. It acts directly on fluid retention, reduces soft-tissue swelling, and addresses stagnant mucus and lymph congestion within the tissue networks.
Amalaki (Emblica officinalis)
Provides essential antioxidant protection and rejuvenation (Rasayana). It balances Pitta, strengthens vascular integrity, supports tissue healing, and counteracts any harshness from the mineral components.
Mandura Loha Bhasma (Calcined Iron Slag)
Acts as a powerful bio-available iron source and hepatic stimulant. It improves blood quality (Raktaranjan), enhances microcirculation, and helps dissolve chronic tissue hardness and localized fluid stasis.
Kanta Loha Bhasma (Calcined Magnetic Iron Ore)
A superior grade of processed iron known for its high therapeutic potency (Prabhava). It works as a deep Lekhana (tissue-scraping) agent, resolving deep-seated fibrous growth and restoring channel patency.
Shuddha Shilajit (Purified Asphaltum)
A premier mineral-pitch rejuvenator and channel detoxifier (Srotoshodhana). It accelerates cell metabolism, enhances bio-absorption of companion minerals, and actively breaks down firm tissue hypertrophy and edema.
Triphala Kwatha (Decoction of Triphala)
Utilized for seven full days of continuous trituration (Mardana), this decoction infuses the formulation with concentrated polyphenols and organic acids, rendering the mineral core highly biocompatible, bio-absorbable, and potent against Kapha-Vata swelling.
METHOD OF PREPARATION
- Take equal proportions of fine powders of Haritaki, Bibhitaki, Amalaki, along with Mandura Loha Bhasma, Kanta Loha Bhasma, and Shuddha Shilajit.
- Transfer all raw materials into a clean stone mortar and pestle (Kharal) and mix thoroughly to produce a uniform, homogeneous mixture.
- Prepare a fresh, concentrated decoction of Triphala (Triphala Kwatha) and pour a sufficient quantity into the mortar to completely submerge the mineral-herb mass.
- Perform continuous trituration (Mardana) daily, adding fresh Triphala decoction as needed, for a total duration of 7 days.
- Once trituration is complete and the mass reaches a smooth, cohesive consistency suitable for pill-making, roll the mass into uniform pills weighing 2 Ratti each (approximately 250 mg).
- Dry the prepared pills in shade and store them in airtight glass containers away from moisture and direct light.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Acute Elephantiasis (Naveen & Purana Shlipada)>
Administer Shlipadari Loha alongside Triphala Phanta (Triphala infusion). The combined scraping (Lekhana) and decongestant (Srotoshodhaka) actions of processed iron, Shilajit, and Triphala target hard, indurated lymphatic tissues. Regular administration slowly liquefies stagnant Kapha, clears obstructed fluid channels, and reduces physical swelling in affected limbs.
Microvascular & Lymphatic Stasis
The bio-processed iron Bhasmas (Kanta and Mandura) enhance systemic hematopoiesis and capillary perfusion. By improving microvascular delivery and venous drainage, the formulation prevents localized fluid pooling and secondary cutaneous induration.
Chronic Inflammatory Soft-Tissue Hypertrophy
Through the synergy of Shuddha Shilajit and Triphala, the formulation exerts significant anti-inflammatory and tissue-modifying effects. It arrests ongoing fibrotic changes in skin and subcutaneous tissues, gradually softening hyperkeratotic and thickened dermal layers.
IMPACT ON DOSHA
Shlipadari Loha is predominantly a Kapha-Vata Shamaka (pacifying) and Srotoshodhaka (channel-clearing) formulation.
- Kapha Dosha: The astringent, dry, and scraping (Lekhana) properties of Triphala, Shilajit, and Loha Bhasmas aggressively reduce stagnant Kapha, mucus, and fluid exudates responsible for limb enlargement.
- Vata Dosha: By clearing obstruction in the channels (Srotorodha), it removes the root cause of Vata entrapment, relieving localized aches, stiffness, and heaviness in the limbs.
- Pitta Dosha: Kept in balance due to the cooling, soothing nature of Amalaki and proper processing with Triphala.
INDICATIONS
- Shlipada (Elephantiasis / Filariasis / Progressive Lymphedema)
- Srotorodha (Chronic lymphatic and vascular obstructions)
- Granthi & Shotha (Localized fibrotic nodules, glandular enlargements, and chronic edema)
- Meda & Kapha Vridhi (Excessive fat deposition and Kapha accumulation in tissues)
DOSAGE & ANUPANA
- Standard Dose: 1 to 4 pills (approx. 250 mg to 1000 mg).
- Frequency: 2 times a day.
- Anupana (Adjuvant): Triphala Infusion (Triphala Phanta).
- Dietary Rule (Pathya): Strict adherence to a light, easily digestible, Kapha-reducing diet (Pathya Ahara) for 4 to 6 months is required to achieve complete therapeutic resolution.
CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS
- Medical Supervision: Must be taken strictly under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner due to the presence of mineral Bhasmas and Shilajit.
- Contraindications: Avoid active peptic ulcer disease, acute gastritis, hyperacidity (Amlapitta), severe iron overload conditions (hemochromatosis), pregnancy, lactating mothers, and young children.
CONCLUSION
Shlipadari Loha represents an exemplary clinical application of classical Rasashastra in addressing stubborn, structural lymphatic pathologies like elephantiasis (Shlipada). Rather than offering brief symptomatic relief or temporary fluid drainage, it attacks the underlying pathology by clearing deep-seated channel blockages (Srotoshodhana), reducing fibrotic induration, and restoring normal tissue metabolism. Supported by a disciplined dietary regimen (Pathya) over 4 to 6 months, Shlipadari Loha offers a comprehensive, time-tested approach to halting and reversing chronic limb enlargement and lymphatic stagnation.
