ABSTRACT

Most affected population by STD nowadays is the young generation, particularly teenagers. Improper sex education and easily available sexual adult content on the internet is the leading cause of spoiling the youth’s sexual health and providing wrong sex-related information. These ill mannered systems and increased sex-related curiosity is leading to an increased risk of chances of unprotected sexual intercourse and sexually transmitted diseases. In this article we are going to discuss unsafe intimation, its harmful effects.

INTRODUCTION

Unsafe sex is the sex between a sensitive person and a partner who is infected with a sexually transmitted disease, without taking any protective measures. Lack of information and knowledge is the main reason for unsafe sex. Unsafe sex enhances the risk of various disorders such as HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus), gonorrhea, Chlamydia, HPV (Human papillomavirus), and syphilis. Unsafe sex is responsible for the increasing rate of AIDS/HIV.

Harmful effects of unsafe sexual intercourse

Unsafe sexual intercourse may lead to many types of infections which result in Sexually transmitted diseases. Name specifies that these types of disease are transferred from one person to another via sexual contact. STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) are also known as Venereal disease (VD), sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Some Venereal disease may cause symptoms. Some Common symptoms are

In men

  • Discomfort or pain during urination or sex.
  • Bumps, rashes, or sore around the testicles, anus, penis, thighs, buttocks, or mouth.
  • Swelling and pain on testicles.
  • Blood from the penis.

In women

  • discomfort or pain during urination or sex.
  • Blood from the vagina.
  • Itchiness in the vagina.
  • Bumps, rashes, or sore on around the testicles, anus, penis, thighs, buttocks, or mouth.

There are several types of sexually transmitted infections Some most common infections are

 Chlamydia

It is the most common type of sexually transmitted disease that is caused by a bacterial infection. Chlamydia trachomatis is the name of the bacteria that causes Chlamydia. If this bacterial infection is not treated in the early stages, it may lead to long term health problems and also spread to other parts of the body.

This results in several diseases such as

  • Infertility
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Infections of the prostate gland, testicles, or urethra.
  • Pregnant women can pass several diseases to her baby such as eye infections, blindness, pneumonia etc.

HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus)

Some symptoms of HIV are

  • Body ache, Headache
  • Fever and chills
  • Nausea
  • Swelling in lymph nodes
  • Sore throat
  • Skin rashes

HIV results in a very serious disorder named AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). There is no, any effective and specific treatment is available for this disease. Effective and early management can help to control this disease.

Syphilis

It is a common sexually transmitted disease that is caused by bacteria named Treponema pallidum. It transfers from person to person through mucous membrane or skin. If Syphilis remains untreated, it can affect your heart, brain, and other body organs such as loss of hearing, loss of memory, loss of vision, infections of the spinal cord or brain. Syphilis is passed through contact with the sore of an infected person or it can also be transferred from mothers to their children during childbirth. The first sign of syphilis is a small round sore which is also called a chancre. It is very infectious and appears on the anus, mouth, or genitals. In the early stages, several antibiotics are used to treat syphilis.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

It is a viral infection that can transfer from one person to another via sexual contact. It can develop warts on your genitals, mouth, throat, the cervix (entrance to the womb). Some strains of this viral infection result in several types of cancer: Oral cancer, cervical cancer, penile cancer, rectal cancer, etc. There is no specific treatment for some strains of Human papillomavirus.

Some common causes of this viral infection are

  • Oral, anal or vaginal sex without a condom or with HPV infected person.

It can also be transferred from mothers to their children during childbirth.

Various factors that increase the risk of gonorrhea are

  • New sex partner
  • More than one sex partners
  • Gonorrhea or another STDs infected partner

 Genital herpes

Genital herpes is a viral infection that is caused by HSV (Herpes simplex virus). This infection also spreads via sexual contact. It is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STD). As compared to men, women are more prone to this disease.

There are two types of strains of this virus

  1. HSV-1: This type of viral infection causes fever blisters and cold sores. It can be developed in your genital area.

Treatment For Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (JC-Virus)

Abstract

PML is a brain disorder caused by JC virus. JC or John Cunningham virus is a common germ and half of all adults have been exposed to this virus. There is no way to keep yourself from getting it. This virus was first discovered in 1971. It affects the patient’s brain. This is a neurotropic virus that may bind to the cell surface of specific brain cell types. This is responsible for fatal demyelinating disease of the central nervous system which is known as PML. The John Cunningham virus has been detected in neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. In this article we are going to discuss PML and its Ayurvedic treatment.

Introduction

PML stands for Progressive-Multifocal-Leukoencephalopathy. This is a rare and fatal viral disease which is characterized by progressive damage or inflammation of the white matter or we can say that this is a disease of the white matter of the brain. This could be caused at multiple locations in the brain. This disease is mainly caused in those patients who are immune compromised and in those patients who have weak immunity. PML is an aggressive viral disease of the central nervous system. It attacks the cells that make myelin (fatty substance which coats and protects nerve fibers in the brain). This disease affects virtually any part of the body and also this is a life-threatening condition.

Etiology/Causes

This disease as discussed above is mainly caused by JC virus. This virus is normally present inside the body of the individual and kept under control by our immune system. If our immunity is strong then this virus will no longer cause any harm to the body. But if a person is immune compromised then this virus will show harmful effects  tinhe body.

Other known causes are

Person who is suffering from AIDS

  • Immunosuppressive medications for longer period of time
  • Multiple sclerosis medications
  • Autoimmune disorders

F1.large

Who will get this virus

There is no exact idea who is prone to this virus. But some known facts are

  • Children who are addicted to eat soil
  • Low immunity

Clinical features/Sign and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms can develop over several weeks to months and also depend on the location of damage in the brain. The person who is having PML will show the following symptoms

  • Clumsiness
  • Progressive weakness
  • Visual and speech changes
  • Personality changes
  • Facial drooping
  • Mental slowness
  • Loss of language skills
  • If this virus affects the parietal and occipital lobes of the brain then it can leads to a phenomenon which is known as Alien hand syndrome

Pathogenesis

As mentioned above, this disease affects the myelin sheath so it is known as a demyelinating disease. It damages the myelin sheath which covers the axons of the nerve cells, which further impaired the transmission of nerve impulses. It mainly affects the subcortical white matter, which is particularly present in the parietal and occipital lobe.

Diagnosis

This disease is diagnosed on the basis of progressive course of the symptoms of PML. Some diagnostic tests for this disease are

  • Lumbar puncture: This test is done for the diagnosis of this disease by taking samples of the spinal fluid and tested further for detecting JC virus antibodies.
  • Blood tests: Blood samples can reveal the presence of JC virus antibodies in the blood.
  • Imaging tests: CT scan images show multifocal, non-contrast, hypo-dense lesions without mass effect. But MRI is more sensitive than CT scan.
  • Brain biopsy: In this technique a piece of tissue is removed from the patient’s brain and examined under a microscope.

Treatment

In allopathic medicine, there is no specific treatment for PML. No drug effectively treats the viral infection. The treatment aim is to reverse the immune deficiency to stop the disease progress. If a patient is using immunosuppressant drugs then stop the medications. This is the way to treat the PML by improving the immune system. One more thing we can do is via plasma exchange. This procedure will help in clearing the system by removing drugs that caused PML.

If a person is having PML due to HIV-AIDS, then we can use highly active antiretroviral therapy. This drug helps in reducing the viral reproduction.

Complications

This disease shows the following complications as this is a life threatening condition

  • Dementia
  • Seizures
  • Coma
