Ayurvedic View On Monoclonal Gammopathy & Its Treatment!

Abstract

Monoclonal Gammopathy is commonly seen in elderly people who have moderately raised levels of M proteins or abnormal immunoglobulin protein present in the blood. There are rarely any symptoms, but few people may experience peripheral neuropathy (pain or burning in hands and feet). M-protein is an antibody that indicates developing disease when present in blood or urine and is produced by abnormal, precancerous or cancerous cells.

Monoclonal Gammopathy

What is Monoclonal Gammopathy?

Monoclonal Gammopathy is a condition when abnormal protein is present in the blood. It needs regular monitoring as it is an early sign of developing multiple myelome or smoldering myeloma; Monoclonal proteins, also known as M protein, are produced by WBC called plasma cells in the bone marrow. Monoclonal means that there is presence of only one type of abnormal protein. There are no symptoms or no adverse health effects, still regular monitoring is necessary to check for any sign of cancer or disease that may develop with time, as individuals having monoclonal gammopathies have higher risk of developing serious diseases of blood and bone marrow.

Symptoms Of Monoclonal Gammopathy

Monoclonal Gammopathies cause no symptoms. Monoclonal protein is found accidently while doing other routine blood tests. The condition of patients with abnormal protein in blood will never get worse but regular monitoring is needed as it may progress to the following disease conditions:

  1. Multiple myeloma
  2. Plasma cell leukemia
  3. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
  4. Primary amyloidosis
  5. Waldenstorm’s macroglobulinemia
  6. Solitary plasmacytoma

Symptoms of these conditions may include:

  • Weakness or tiredness
  • Anemia
  • Tingling and numbness in hands and feet
  • Recurring infection
  • Pain in bones or soft tissues
  • Bruising and bleeding

Causes Of Monoclonal Gammopathy

Abnormal plasma cells in bone marrow produce M protein. The exact cause of monoclonal gammopathy is unknown. It is believed that certain genetic or environmental conditions may play a role in development of the disease.

Risk factors Of Monoclonal Gammopathy

Certain risk factors for the development of monoclonal gammopathy are:

  • Age around 70 years
  • More prevalent in men
  • Family history
  • Africans and African, Americans are at high risk as compared to white people.

Complications Of Monoclonal Gammopathy

The disease may develop into certain kinds of blood cancers or other severe diseases which are as follows:

  • Light chain Amyloidosis
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Lymphoma
  • Waldenstorm macroglobulinemia

Diagnosis For Monoclonal Gammopathy

After the accidental detection of M-protein in blood or urine, doctors may ask for other tests as well:

  • Detailed blood tests to rule out other reasons for raised protein levels and to look for kidney damage
  • Urine test
  • MRI or PET scan
  • Bone marrow test

Ayurvedic Treatment Of Restless Leg Syndrome & Remedies

Abstract

You might have noticed someone sitting next to you in the school, college, office or while you were travelling in a train or a plane was shaking his legs continuously for no reason. It might seem awkward, but they are suffering from a condition called Restless leg syndrome. They do not do it on purpose, rather there is an irresistible desire to do so. Today, we are going to discuss the same in our article.

Symptoms Of Restless Leg Syndrome

Introduction

Restless leg syndrome is also known by another name of Willis-Ekbom disease. In this medical condition there is an irresistible urge to move the legs continuously which is more prominent towards the end of a day. This aggravates when one is sitting for a while or lying down in the bed which often makes it difficult to fall asleep. There is slight relief in this urge when patients get up and move around. Though it could start at any age, the elderly are most affected. There is a strong family history of this disease.

Causes

Though the exact cause of the restless leg syndrome is not known but some factors are seen associated with this condition such as:

  • Family history
  • Pregnancy
  • Diabetes
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Kidney disease
  • Iron deficiency

Symptoms

Following are the symptoms of the restless leg syndrome:

  • Urge to keep on moving legs
  • Feeling of uneasiness while sitting
  • Difficulty in falling asleep
  • Sleepiness during daytime (This happens because of unrefreshing sleep at night time)
  • Aggravation of symptoms in the evening
  • Leg twitching while sleeping.

Diagnosis

When a patient comes to the OPD with the above mentioned complaints, the physician diagnoses the condition only with the help of symptoms and history. There is no diagnostic tool for restless leg syndrome.

Treatment in Allopathy

The scope of treatment of restless leg syndrome is very limited in allopathy. Either they are dependent on the anti-seizure medications or they prescribe sleep pills. This approach is very harmful, as long use of such medications may have adverse effects on the body.

Ayurvedic point of view

Ayurveda sees life in a very holistic way. It is considered that life is connected with the whole environment, and there is a strong connection between each and every being. This could be somewhat related to the food cycle. Every being is composed of five basic elements of the Universe; this is a strong belief of Ayurveda. These five basic elements are Space, Air, Water, Fire, and Soil (Earth). These five elements in a fixed combination of two come together to form a dosha (energy) that runs different functions of the body. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three doshas. These energies flow in a normal healthy human body in a balanced way, and a disease is nothing but an imbalance of this very energy. If we talk about restless leg syndrome, then it is the vata dosha which is vitiated. Therefore, the treatment plan should be based upon the bringing balance of this altered vata dosha.

Planet Ayurveda is a leading firm which prepares natural herbs using authentic ways and has great results in curing restless leg syndrome.
