How to Treat Nabothian Cyst Through Ayurveda

Abstract

A cyst is a lumpy growth filled with fluid or semisolid substances in it. Nabothian Cyst is found in females in their cervix, which is located at the lower end of the uterus, above the vagina. Cysts are non-cancerous and are not much harmful but still need to be removed soon from the body to prevent future complications and health problems. In this article, we will get to know the causes of its occurrence and associated symptoms with it. We will also discuss why cysts are so common these days and what can we do to prevent it and what are ayurvedic measures to cure the cyst problems.

Introduction

Nabothian Cyst is a cyst on the surface of the cervix also called the cervical canal. They are tiny bumps filled with mucous. These cysts are non-cancerous and are very commonly found nowadays in people. Nabothian cysts are small in size up to 4 millimeters in diameter. They are generally smooth and whitish in color. These are not painful but show some abnormal symptoms.

Why are cysts formed?

Cysts can grow anywhere in the body and they differ in appearance according to the location of their formation. They can be on the skin surface- sebaceous, epidermoid cyst, or inside body in any organ like- the breast, kidney, ovary, cervix, etc. Cysts are needed to be differentiated from pseudocysts. Cysts are not harmful until they are infectious and very large. Cysts are formed when the excess protein is trapped under the skin or a hair follicle. Nabothian Cyst is formed due to the irregular production of mucus that covers the healthy glands in the cervix, creating a barrier that traps the mucous inside the gland.

Causes of Nabothian Cyst

Why is it becoming common these days?

Due to excess unhealthy diet intake and living a sedentary life, unhealthy life and unhygienic intercourse habits had increased the chances of infections and diseases like Nabothian Cysts these days.

Ayurvedic aspect

Nabothian Cyst can be correlated to “Yoni Kanda”. Yoni Kanda is a swelling filled with pus and blood in the cervical region due to an imbalance of doshas and physical trauma. Trauma can be due to various reasons in the Yoni. Vata and Pitta Dosha’s aggravation leads to the formation of Kanda. The Kanda is described as irregularly shaped but with a rounded structure that is filled with fluid that contains pus and traces of infected blood. The ayurvedic treatment focuses on the pacification of doshas and treating the disease naturally.

Causes

The cause of mucous trap in the glands of the cervical canal is-

  • Growth of excessive skin cells
  • Trauma to the cervix
  • Childbirth
  • Chronic Cervicitis
  • Neoplasia
  • Cases after menopause
  • Infection

  • Due to unhealthy food intake
  • Inadequate Lifestyle
  • Unhygienic and excessive intercourse
  • Trauma in yoni with nails, teeth, or other sharp objects

Symptoms

Symptoms of Nabothian Cyst are

  • Unusual bleeding between periods
  • Discharge from vagina
  • Pelvic pain
  • Discomfort
  • Symptoms of infection

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is confirmed with

  • Physical examination
  • Medical history of childbirth or trauma
  • Per vagina examination
  • USG-vagina
  • CT scan
  • MRI scan
  • Colposcopy
  • Cyst biopsy

Treatment

  • The treatment of Nabothian Cyst is not recommended in modern pathy. Regular visits for the examination and check on the cyst size and growth are done.
  • Cysts with no growth signs are not recommended for treatment, and
  • Cysts expected to grow are removed Surgically- Cystectomy.
  • Electrocautery and Cryotherapy are also recommended in some cases

General medications are continued-

  • Antibiotics
  • Analgesics

Cervicitis – Causes, Symptoms, Herbal Remedies and Ayurvedic Treatment

Cervicitis is a female reproductive infection which is found in the lower end of the uterus that is called the cervix, which gets open into the vagina. The uterus is a female reproductive organ, which is located within the pelvic region. Uterus has three layers, the innermost layer of the uterus is the endometrium, the middle muscular layer is the myometrium and the outermost layer is the perimetrium. In this article, we are going to discuss the cause, symptoms and treatment of cervicitis.

INTRODUCTION

Infectious or noninfectious inflammation of the cervix is known as cervicitis. It is common in women and goes along with vaginal discharge and pain during intercourse. Most adult women are suffering from cervicitis. The most common bacteria which are involved in causing cervicitis are streptococcus or staphylococcus.

Cervicitis

CAUSES OF CERVICITIS

The most common cause of cervicitis is sexually transmitted diseases:-

  1. Allergic reaction from the latex used in condoms or douches
  2. Sexually transmitted infections like Gonorrhea, chlamydia, mycoplasma genitalium or genital herpes.
  3. Radiation therapy
  4. Irritation from tampons
  5. Bacterial overgrowth
  6. Hormonal imbalance
  7. Pregnancy

TYPES OF CERVICITIS

There are two types of cervicitis

  1. ACUTE CERVICITIS
  2. CHRONIC CERVICITIS

1. ACUTE CERVICITIS

When cervicitis is often due to infection, it is known as acute cervicitis. The various organisms which are involved in acute cervicitis are E.coli, streptococcus, chlamydia and gonococcus.

Clinical features

  1. The cervix is tender to touch
  2. Mucopurulent discharge
  3. Vaginal examination is painful

2. CHRONIC CERVICITIS

When cervicitis is non-infectious, it is known as chronic cervicitis. Non-infectious causes of cervicitis are gynaecological procedures, allergens and chemicals.

Clinical features

  1. Lower back pain
  2. Excessive mucus discharge
  3. Congestive dysmenorrhoea

SYMPTOMS OF CERVICITIS

  1. Abnormal vaginal discharge which can be white, yellow and grey.
  2. Unpleasant odour of vaginal discharge
  3. Vaginal irritation
  4. Painful sexual intercourse
  5. Unexpected light vaginal bleeding
  6. Lower back pain
  7. Frequent urination
  8. Pelvic pain

DIAGNOSIS OF CERVICITIS

  1. PAP smear
  2. Pelvic examination
  3. Cervical discharge culture
  4. Cervical biopsy

TREATMENT OF CERVICITIS

  1. Antibiotics
  2. Antiviral medication
  3. Antifungal medication
  4. Cryotherapy

COMPLICATIONS OF CERVICITIS

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF CERVICITIS

Cervicitis is not said to be a disease in Ayurveda, it is a contagious disease similar to acharana and upapluta. Cervicitis is considered an Agantuja Vyadhi which is caused due to infections.

1. Upapluta

It is one among 20 gynaecological disorders which is mainly seen due to aggravation of kapha dosha which is vitiated with vata dosha which contaminates the uterus and produces abnormalities. This condition includes pain in the genital area with mucus and excessive vaginal discharge.

2. Acharana

It is one among 20 gynaecological disorders which is mainly seen due to improper maintenance of the genital health of the women. It is an infectious condition which leads to vaginal itching and excessive discharge from the vagina.

NIDANA (CAUSES) OF CERVICITIS

  1. Factors that lead to kapha and rakta vitiation
  2. Unprotected sex
  3. Krimi (parasite) infestation

SAMPRAPTI (PATHOPHYSIOLOGY) OF CERVICITIS

It is considered an Agantuja Vyadhi. With nidan, the microorganisms enter the body and vitiate various dosha and further vitiate rakta or mamsa dhatu which produces various symptoms.

LAKSHANA (SYMPTOMS) OF CERVICITIS

  1. Yoni srava (vaginal discharge)
  2. Atiartava (bleeding between periods)
  3. Kukshi shula (lower abdominal pain)
  4. Ksheena (weakness)

CHIKITSA (TREATMENT) OF CERVICITIS

  1. Yonidhoopana- It is the fumigation of the outer part of the vulval regions
  2. Yoniprakshalana– Washing the vulvar area and vagina with herbal decoctions
  3. Yoni Pichu- Use of Tampons with medicated ghee/oils preparation
  4. Yonipratisarana- Powdering the area with fine herbal
  5. Uttar Basti- It is the application and retention of herbal formulation inside the vaginal region for specific time intervals like an enema and then flushes out.
