WHAT IS GLOMUS JUGULARETUMOR?

Glomus jugular tumor is a kind of tumor that arises within the skull cavity. The area which is affected by this disease is jugular foreman. This jugular tumor starts its origin from the preganglionic cells which is present in the outer most layer of the jugular bulb.
This spreads along the least resistance pathways such as infralabyrinthine and infracochlear cell tracts, vertical infratubal segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA), petrous segment and then toward nasopharynx. The jugular bulb’s middle wall acts as a barrier in tumor spreading.Whenever this barrier is ruptured, tumor spreads towards lower cranial nerves. Inwards this spreads along the neck carotid foramen and the carotid sheath.

WHY GLOMUS JUGULARETUMOR DISEASE OCCURS?

Glomus jugularetumoris the second most common temporal bone related tumor. This frequently affects females than males.

This problem is related with genetic mutations and the gene that is related with this ailment is SDHD gene. This is present on two regions PGL1 and PGL2 which is present on chromosome 11. The first germ line is identified is PGL1 location. The SDHD gene encodes the protein succinateubiquinone reductase subunit D. another gene is SDHC, which is present on PGL3 locus on 1q chromosome. There is one another mutation occurred on locus PGL4 present on 1p36 chromosome and the gene which is affected is SDHB. Generally, SDHD and SDHC are membrane bound proteins that anchor SDHB and SDHA.

So, the disease Glomus jugularetumor is due to mutation in one of the genes SDHB, SDHC and SDHD.
