In most cases, the first noticeable symptom is weakness of the eye muscles. In others, difficulty in swallowing and slurred speech may be the first signs.

  • The onset of the disorder is sudden. Often symptoms are intermittent.
  • It is generally seen that diagnosis of myasthenia gravis may be delayed if the symptoms are variable.
  • The muscle weakness of Myasthenia gravis worsens with activity and improves with rest.
  • Muscles that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expressions are affected. The muscles that control breathing and neck and limb movements can also be affected .

Weakness in affected muscles may cause:

  1. The patient may experience breathing difficulty because of weakness of the chest wall muscles.
  2. The patient may experience chewing or swallowing difficulty, causing frequent gagging and choking.
  3. The patient may experience difficulty climbing stairs ,lifting objects or rising from a seated position.
  4.  The patient may experience difficulty in talking.

WHAT ARE THE INVESTIGATIONS FOR MYASTHENIA GRAVIS?

Physical examination may reveal muscle weakness that progressively worsens as the muscle is used.In many people with Myasthenia gravis , the eye muscles are affected first.The patient’s reflexes and sensation are normal.Weakness from Myasthenia gravis may affect the arms, legs , breathing or swallowing muscles, and any other muscle group.

  1. Acetylcholine receptor antibodies (may be present in the blood)
  2. CT or MRI scan of the chest
  3. NCS Nerve Conduction study.
  4. EMG (Electromyography )

  6. Here CT (COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY ) may show abnormal growth of thymus cells or show evidence of  Thymoma.
  7. EMG is known as Electromyography which measures electrical activity in response to stimulation of the nerve of the muscle.
  8. NCS (Nerve conduction study) measures how fast an electrical impulse moves through nerve conduction in the nervous system.This gives a  clear indication about Nerve damage .During this procedure the nerve is stimulated with electrode patches around the skin.

MEDICATION

Corticosteroids and immunosuppressants are the first choice of drugs in the treatment for Myasthenia gravis.These medications help to reduce the abnormal immune response that is most observed by the patient  in Myasthenia gravis.

Moreover  cholinesterase inhibitors, such as pyridostigmine (Mestinon), have been used  to increase the  communication duration  between nerves and muscles.

1. Thymus gland removal

It is known as the removal of the thymus gland.  It  is part of the immune system that may be appropriate for many patients who are suffering  with Myasthenia Gravis. Once the thymus gland  is removed, patients generally  show less muscle weakness.Benign Tumors  are always removed because they may become cancerous.

2. Plasma exchange

Plasmapheresis is a procedure which is  also known as a plasma exchange. The process helps in the  removal of harmful antibodies from the blood.  This may result in an improvement in muscle strength of the patient. Whereas Plasmapheresis  is a short-term treatment. WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF SAMA VATA LAKSHANA?

According to ayurveda our body is composed of three doshas.Vata, pita and kapha.When Vata dosha combines with ama it produces the following signs and symptoms :

  1. Tandra : Fatigue.It means the patient may experience fatigue.
  2. Staimitya:Here the patient may be inactive.
  3. Gaurav:Here the patient may experience a feeling of heaviness.
  4. Shopha:Here the patient may experience swelling.
  5. Shaitya:It means the patient may experience coldness.
  6. Shopha :Here the patient may experience swelling.
  7. Agnihanibhi: Here the patient may experience loss of power of agni.

Most babies of the world get this disease due to genetic causes. It is a chromosomal disorder which hampers the quality of life of patients as well as the attendants. It is also known as russell syndrome, silver russell dwarfism, silver russell dwarfism. So let us discuss this disease in detail so as to check out its signs and symptoms and how to take ayurvedic treatments.

Russell Silver Syndrome

INTRODUCTION

It is a very rare disorder which can occur due to intrauterine growth retardation and poor growth after birth. The patient has a prominent forehead, triangular face and asymmetrical body. The motor speech is delayed. The cause of this disease is still unknown. the patient gets difficulty in feeding in childhood due to asymmetrical body and loss of consciousness. The patient’s brain is developing but the other body parts and the height got restricted. The patient is just under weight. This syndrome is first described by russell thats why this disease is known as russell silver syndrome. About 60% of patients are diagnosed with this disease every year. The molecular genetic analysis should be performed to analyze the genetic recurrence of the disease.

IN AYURVEDA

This disease is related to ashtanindit purush. Acharya charak tells about these 8 types of purusha and its signs and symptoms too. This is a genetic disorder that comes from the mother or father. Amoung all the cases the patients of obese and lean have despicable features. These both patients does not tolerate the physical exercises.The lean patients may leads to thirst, hunger and difficulty in sexual intercourse.

CAUSES

The causes are very complex. These causes are due to chromosome 11 and chromosome 7 dysfunctioning. This disease is genetic.

PROGNOSIS

Russel syndrome looks like a long term disorder which is good and rest is dependent upon the severity of the disease and its complications. The challenges are very common in this disease as the patient has to suffer with daily life challenges. Metabolic syndromes may be present during this disease.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

Following are the sign and symptoms of the disease

The signs and symptoms of the disease are mostly seen at birth or in early childhood.

  1. After birth the length and the height are below average
  2. The body and the limbs are asymmetrical
  3. The head circumference is normal
  4. Appearance of the face is triangular
  5. One arm is shorter than another
  6. Forehead is prominent
  7. Scoliosis
  8. Patients may suffer with kidney dysfunctions
  9. Hypoglycemia
