Abstract

Sacroiliitis is acondition of joint pain that affects sacroiliiac joints of the body. Sacroiliiac joints are located at the place where our lower spine is connected to the pelvis. The primary symptom of the sacroiliitis is pain in the buttocks, lower back or down towards the legs. This pain may be aggravated by standing for a long time or by climbing the stairs.

Boswellia Serrata (Shallaki)

Guggul (Commiphora Mukul)

Trigonella Foenum Graecum (Fenugreek)

Another effective herb for the treatment of sacroiliitis is Trigonella foenum graecum. This herb is commonly known as Fenugreek (Methi). Terminalia Arjuna (Arjuna)

Terminalia arjuna is one of a frequently used herbs in Ayurveda for various health purposes. Cissus Quadrangularis (Asthisamhari)

Natural Ayurvedic Herbs for Slip Disc

Abstract

Our spinal column is made up of 26 bones known as vertebrae which are cushioned by discs. These discs protect bones by absorbing the shock from daily activities like walking, lifting and twisting. Each disc has two parts – inner portion (soft) and outer ring (tough). Injury or weakness can cause the inner portion of disc to protrude through outer rings. This is known as slipped disc or herniated disc.

SYMPTOMS OF SLIP DISC

Symptoms of slip disc depend upon location and type of tissue involved in injury. Slip disc or Bulge disc can occur in any part of spine from neck to lower back but the most common area is lower back for slipped disc.

If ruptured of disc has taken place in back (thoracic spine)

  • Pain and numbness most commonly on one side of body
  •  Pain worsens at night
  • Intense pain in lower parts of body include foot, thigh and buttocks
  • Symptoms include muscle weakness, numbness, travelling pain, tingling, aching and burning sensation in affected area due to root irritation.
  • Paralysis from waist down.
  • Changes in function of bladder.

If ruptured of disc has taken in neck area (cervical spine)

  • Pain while moving your neck.
  • Deep pain near or over the shoulder.
  • Radiating pain in the back of the skull, upper arm, and forearm and in the fingers.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE SLIP DISC

Diagnosis is made by practitioner based on history, symptoms and physical examination of patient.

Physical examination may include straight leg raise that is done to determine to low back pain during slip disc.

Imaging Technique

  • X-Ray- to detect bone abnormalities.
  • CT scan (computerized tomography) – which gives images and structure of spinal column.
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) – to diagnose severe nerve damage.
  • Myelogram- involves the injection of contrast dye into spinal cord.

CAUSES OF SLIP DISC

Slipped disc occurs when the outer ring becomes weaken or torn and allows the inner portion to slip out. It may happen

  • With increase in age
  • Certain motions like  twisting or lifting an heavy object
  • Overweight
  • More common in men than women
  • Genetic factor may be one of the reason in rare cases.

Boswellia – Boswellia is a natural inflammation fighting gum resin extract derived from Boswellia serrate tree. It is also known as “Indian Frankincense”.

Curcumin – It is chemical constituent of Curcuma longa. It has anti-inflammatory property.

Uses : These are also useful in treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, cervical spondylitis. It can be used for longer time without any side effect.

Dosage – 2 capsules twice in a day with lukewarm water.

2. HAKAM CHURNA

Hakam Churna is a classical ayurvedic formulation consists of Chandershoor (Lepidium sativum), Kalonji (Nigellia sativa), Methi (Trigonella foenum graecum), Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi).

Uses : Its anti-inflammatory property helpful in all painful conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, cervical spondylitis. It is also helpful in liver function and improves digestion, reduces serum cholesterol.

Dosage – 1 tsp twice in a day with lukewarm water.

3. YOGRAJ GUGGUL

It is a tablet which is composed of ingredients are- Shudh Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica), Pippali (Piper longum), Jeeraka (Cuminum cyminum), Devdaru (Cedrus deodara), Ela (Eletteria cardamomum), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Mustaka (Citrus rotundus), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Ardraka (Zingiber officinale).

Uses : This is very useful in reducing pain because of anti-inflammatory property. In general it helps to support the health of all over body organs.

Dosage – 2 tablets twice daily with lukewarm water.

4. AAMVATANTAK CHURNA

Aamvatantak Churna is 100% natural product that consists of different herbs are- Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Methi (Trigonella foenum graecum), Suranjaan (Colchicum automnale), Gorakhmundi (Sphaeranthus indicus), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Sonth (Zingiber officinale).
