Treatment of Slipped Disc in Ayurveda

slipped disc

Slipped Disc: Slipped disc is also known as a Prolapsed and herniated disc. The herniated disk is defined as a problem with one of the disks (rubbery cushions) that usually sit between the vertebrae (individual bones) that are connected with each other to make a spine. The human spinal column from the bottom to the top consists of fiver bones in the lumbar spine which is usually followed by the Coccyx and the Sacrum at the base, twelve in the Thoracic spine and seven in the cervical spine of the spinal column. All the bones of the spinal column are cushioned by the disks. These discs absorb the disk from different kinds of shocks that are caused due to normal activities of life such as Twisting, Walking as well as Lifting and protect the bones from different kinds of injuries.

Slipped Disc

Each and every disk is further divided into two different parts that are Tough Outer Ring and Gelatinous, Soft Inner Portion. Whenever any Injury or Weakness occurs to the spinal column, the inner part of the disc protrude through the Tough Outer part of the disc. This type of injury is called Herniated, Slipped or Prolapsed disc. If the Herniated disc compresses any spinal nerves, then the person may also experience pain, weakness, and numbness. In severe cases, the affected person may surgery to repair or remove the Prolapsed disk. In most people, there are no symptoms of herniated disk and surgery is not a necessary way to relieve the problem of slipped disc.

  • Slipped Disc is not a Communicable Disorder.
  • Men are prone to this problem as compared to women.

Causes of Slipped Disc

There are plenty of reasons which may cause a slipped disc. Few of them are as follows:

  • Age: Adults are more prone to this disorder because after some age outer part of the disc gets torn and weak which also the inner soft portion of the disc to slip out.
  • Certain Motions: There are some motions that may also cause a problem of slipped disc. A disc can slip out from its place while a person is turning or twisting to lift a heavy object. During lifting a very heavy and large object, we are in a move that puts a great strain on the lower back which results in slipping of the disc.
  • Overweight: Overweight may also be the reason behind the slipping of the disc. If a person is overweight then he or she is at great risk of Herniated or Slipped disc.
  • Weak muscle
  • Sedentary lifestyle

Symptoms of Slipped Disc

The problem of a slipped disc can happen to anyone and at any time and in any part of the spine from the lower back to neck. Most people know that the Spinal column is a network of blood vessels and nerves. A Herniated disc can put extra pressure on the muscles and nerves around it.

Some Common Signs and Symptoms of Prolapsed Disc include:

  • Most commonly Numbness and Pain especially in one part of the body.
  • Pain in the spinal column that extends to the patient’s legs or arms.
  • Pain arising after walking for short distances.

  • The unexplained weakness of muscles.
  • Burning, Tingling, or Aching sensations in the affected area of the spinal column.

Depending on the location of the affected bone in the spinal column, the symptoms of pain may vary from one person to another person.

Diagnosis of Slipped Disc

If any person is having any of the above-mentioned systems then he or she can contact a doctor. Then the doctor will perform a physical examination of the patient in which he or she ordered the patient to give a neurological exam. With the help of this exam, the doctor will detect the Strength of Muscles, Ability of walking and Reflexes.
