Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPDTreatment in Ayurveda

Abstract

The word paranoid means ‘to wrongly believe that other people or your close ones are betraying you and want to harm you and personality is a combination of thoughts and behavior that makes everyone unique. Misalignment of behavior or thoughts can lead to mental disorders. In one of such mental disorders, the person has distrust, hysterical, suspicious or obsessive behavior, which is not normal. This belief becomes very strong and it may be termed Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD]. Through this article, we will discuss various aspects of Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD] and its management according to Ayurveda.

Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD]

Introduction

Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD] is a mental condition in which a person often believes that others are trying to harm her. Their way of thinking is eccentric and problematic to others. They always believe that someone is trying to kill them or harm them. Although some people can function well and are married, and do jobs while others with Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD] can be seriously disabled from doing nothing.

Generally, personality disorders are characterized into three categories namely

  1. Cluster A personality disorders
  2. Cluster B personality disorders
  3. Cluster C personality disorders

Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD] is characterized by Cluster A personality disorders. This condition usually begins in early childhood and is susceptible to worsening with age.

Ayurvedic Aspect

In Ayurveda texts, mental disorders of the mind are said to be caused by the imbalance of tridoshas in the body as well as the mind. Ayurveda provides a holistic change in the patient’s life. According to Ayurveda, 3 doshas [Vata, Pitta, Kapha] are categorized for the body, and 3 gunas [Sattva, Rajas, Tamas] are categorized for the mind. Likewise the doshas, these gunas have their distinctive qualities. Sattva guna is considered to be flawless while Rajas represents agony and action and Tamas guna represents dormancy and passivity. In short Sattav guna is considered pure and superior to Rajas and Tamas guna. Lack of satwa guna or excess of Rajas and Tamas gun along with an imbalance of tridoshas lead to mental disorders like Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD]. For a swasth (healthy) mind, proper functioning and balance of gunas and doshas are musts. Ayurveda is being used as a complementary therapy in the treatment of Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD]. Treatment modalities will be explained further in this article.

Symptoms

Several symptoms are seen according to the degree and period of the disease condition. The most commonly observed symptoms in most of the patients are

  • Hypersensitive
  • Self-esteem (always think they are right and another person is wrong)
  • Doubt their relationships
  • Blame others
  • Unfounded beliefs
  • Hostile
  • Stubborn children
  • Jealousy factor

Causes

No exact cause is known till now, but is also assumed to be due to the following causes

  • Genetical causes
  • Psychological conditions
  • Schizophrenia
  • Early childhood traumas

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made based on criteria described by the American psychiatric association’s diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders.

  • Physical symptoms and behavior are evaluated to confirm the diagnosis.
  • A psychiatrist may help to rule out the disease.

Treatment

People with Paranoid Personality Disorder [PPD] generally do not seek treatment on their own. On approach the basic treatment offered to the patient is

  • Psychotherapy
  • Anti-anxiety
  • Anti-depressants
  • Anti-psychotics

Ayurvedic treatment

Ayurveda treatment aims at treating the root cause of the disease by using various strategies, that include dietary management, lifestyle modification (including yoga and spiritual therapy), and herbal treatment. Diets and lifestyles are recommended according to each person’s disease condition (extent) and individual prakriti. It promotes physical health and healing of the mind through various methods.

Satvavajaya Chikitsa

Mental conditions occur due to lack of Satwa within the mind, along with disbalance of gunas due to stress in everyday life. Satvavajaya Chikitsa plays an important role in treating such mental disorders. The concept of Satvavajaya Chikitsa works on balancing the nature of the mind through non-pharmacological methods. It can be defined as ayurvedic psychotherapy.

Spiritual Therapy

As discussed previously in the article, Rajas and Tamas guna is the cause of disease. While satwa guna is the sole cause of health. The actions of the Tamas and Rajas guna person lead to the imbalance of tridosha and thus the occurrence of diseases. Spiritual therapy allows us to move from darkness to light which means to move away from ignorance towards the light of awareness. The disease cannot affect the person who has awakened into the light of realization – Sattvik person. This is possible by making a connection with the environment, practicing yoga and meditation, following dincharya, and using aroma and color therapies. However, it may be difficult to adopt a harmonious lifestyle but is not impossible. Once you reached that level of spirituality, leave behind the darkness of Rajas and Tamas and proceed further in life with quality of clarity and purity.
