Erythema Dischromicum Perstans (EDP) Treatment in Ayurveda

Abstract

Our skin is the largest and most important organ of our body, and it plays a major role in our appearance. It’s our responsibility to keep our skin healthy and beautiful along with disease free. Sometimes, certain illnesses can directly harm our skin and make it look abnormal or diseased. One of these is called Erythema dischromicum perstans (EDP). This makes our skin develop rashes very quickly after being exposed to something that might cause an allergic reaction on our skin. These rashes can stay for some days. EDP is more common in young adults but it can be seen at any age. Studies show that women are more prone to get this disease than men. People with darker skin tone are also more likely to get it as compared to lighter ones. There are several causes why EDP might happen, including allergies, harmful chemicals, and it can show various symptoms. In this article, we’ll explore these causes, symptoms and we’ll discuss its potential Ayurvedic management for better health without any side-effects.

Erythema Dischromicum Perstans(EDP)

Introduction

Erythema dischromicum perstans, also known as Ashy dermatosis, is a skin condition that leads to the development of irregular dark patches on the skin. These patches can vary in color, appearing as blue or black, and typically manifest on areas like the face, neck, trunk, and arms. There are several other skin conditions that share similar symptoms with Erythema dischromicum perstans, including Lichen planus pigmentosus, Urticaria, leprosy, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and various skin lesions. It is crucial for a medical professional to carefully assess the skin to accurately diagnose erythema dischromicum perstans and rule out these other conditions. This can occur due to damage to specific skin cells caused by an abnormal immune system response. While effective treatment can lead to recovery, in certain cases, the condition may persist over an extended period without noticeable improvement in symptoms.

Causes

The dark patches seen in Erythema Dyschromicum Perstans (EDP) don’t have a known cause. But some factors may play a role in triggering this condition

  • Genetic factors, like a family history of EDP, might make someone more likely to get it.
  • Spending a lot of time in the sun or being exposed to certain kinds of radiation can also be a factor.
  • Harmful chemicals, such as ammonium nitrate or barium sulfate, might contribute to EDP.
  • Past infections, like whipworm infestations or viral infections, could be linked to the condition.
  • Allergies, especially to cosmetics, might play a role.
  • Certain medications and drugs could have adverse effects that lead to EDP.
  • EDP tends to affect people with darker skin more often.
  • Young adults are more likely to get EDP, and it’s more common in women than in men.

Symptoms

Certainly, here’s the characteristic features of Erythema Dyschromicum Perstans

  • Firstly, It shows up as dark patches on the skin.
  • These patches appear either on one side of the body or may appear on both sides.
  • In initial stages, these patches might have a reddish color with clear edges, or they could be slightly raised, but not always.
  • Eventually, the patches turn to dark grayish or ash-like appearance.
  • They are usually seen on the face, but can also be found on the neck and trunk (excluding the limbs).
  • Usually, these patches don’t cause pain, but sometimes they may cause itching and mild discomfort too.

Ayurvedic View

In Ayurveda, this condition can be correlated by Twak vikaras, Vyang is one of the twak vikara which shows the same symptoms as EDP. Acharya Sushruta wrote in Nidana Sthana 13/46, as –

सहसा मुखमागत्य मण्डलं विसृजत्यतः । नीरुजं तनुकं श्यावं मुखे व्यङ्गं तमादिशेत् ।

This shloka says, sudden anger or excessive anger can vitiate the Vata and Pitta dosha which causes formation of patches all over the face, patches are painless, smaller in size, having gray colored margins are called as Vyang.

Disturbance in aldosterone hormone levels will directly impact on the sodium and potassium concentration in the blood which can cause various health issues. Hyperaldosteronism is a condition that arises due to high levels of aldosterone in the blood. It affects people 30-40 years of age. Females are more commonly diagnosed than males for this condition. Hyperaldosteronism

Hyperaldosteronism is defined as when one or both the adrenal glands in the body produce aldosterone in excess amounts than normally produced by them. It can have several possible causes explained further. Undiagnosed and untreated Hyperaldosteronism may lead to cardiovascular problems such as- Atrial fibrillation, heart attack, and even stroke. Other general diagnostic symptoms depend upon the severity of the condition, and the severity depends upon the levels of aldosterone present in the blood. People with very low high levels of aldosterone may be symptomless.

Ayurvedic Aspect

According to Ayurveda, the hormonal imbalance occurs due to the imbalance in all three doshas. The imbalance in doshas causes aggravation and suppression of one hormone and the other hormone. The doshas levels are disturbed due to improper lifestyle and unhealthy diet practices by us continuously. These factors altogether have a harsh impact on doshas and our bodies. Thus the management of hormonal disorders depends upon the balancing of doshas in the body that directly or indirectly depend on your lifestyle and diet. A proper diet routine according to doshas and Prakriti along with herbal medications (dose managed according to the level of hormones) for stopping the progression of the disease is the line of treatment followed for recovery.
