Ayurvedic Perspective On Obesity The Upcoming Pandemic

ABSTRACT

Now a days obesity is the major issue from which many health problems occurs. According to WHO India is the third most obese country of the world, the prevalence of obesity is higher in urban population as compare to rural. Obesity shortens the lifespan and also diminishes the happiness and efficiency of a person. Obesity is associated with many serious issues like heart attack, hypertension, insulin resistance etc. Obesity is very well said in Ayurveda by Sthoulya and Medoroga by different Acharya’s. It has been classified under “Asta Nindit Purusha” and Santarpanotha vikar. Acharya Charaka has described Obesity as a disease of fat tissue. Ayurveda gives a line of prevention as well as the management of Obesity. An attempt has been made to understand Obesity through Ayurveda and modern point of view and solutions to treat it with the help of Ayurveda. In this article we will discuss obesity and its complications and treatment by ayurveda.

INTRODUCTION OF OBESITY

Obesity is a serious condition defined by an excess fat in the body. It is the condition in which the body fat reaches an abnormal level. It is the condition which leads to certain medical problems and social difficulties for people. A person is said to be obese if his or her BMI is beyond 30. Obesity can lead to many health issues like diabetes, Hypertension, gallstones, gastro – oesophageal reflux disease, as well as psychological problems. According to ayurveda kapha prakriti people are likely to be more prone to obesity. It is a serious health issue of 21th century, the prevalence is increasing in developed and developing countries because of rapid industrialization jobs are becoming sedentary which is responsible for reduction in physical activity.

Following are the common symptoms of obesity:

  • Excessive body fat around the waist and the thigh region.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF OBESITY?

Following are the causes of obesity:

  • Sedentary lifestyle is the main cause of obesity.
  • Stress, emotional factors, poor sleep.
  • People gain weight if they consume more calories than they burn.
  • Genetic – person is more likely to be obese if both or one parent is obese.
  • Overeating is one of the common factors of obesity, especially if the diet contains more fat.
  • Diseases like hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian syndrome, insulin resistance can lead to obesity.

HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH OBESITY

Obesity is not just a cosmetic consideration; it is harmful to one’s health as it is a risk factor for many conditions. It including the following:-

  1. Type 2 Diabetes – The risk of type 2 diabetes increases with the degree and duration of obesity. Type 2 diabetes is associated with central obesity. A person with central obesity has excess fat around his/her waist (apple-shaped figure).
  2. Hypertention (high blood pressure) – High blood pressure is most common health issue which is common among the obese adults.
  3. High cholesterol

COMPLICATIONS OF OBESITY

  • Due to excessive fat deposition there will be constant pressure on arteries and veins which leads to atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction and heart attack.
  • No proper blood circulation to the brain, then it will lead to stroke.
  • Infertility is a very common complication of obesity.

AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE OF OBESITY

In ayurveda, obesity is introduced as” sthoulya “. It is the predisposing stage earlier to medoroga. Obesity occurs when the kapha dosha is aggravated in the body. It is the santarpana janya vyadhi. our body is made up of seven dhatus. These dhatus are rasa, rakta, maans, meda, asthi, majjha, and shukra. From these dhatus one of the dhatu Meda is nourished in excessive amounts and other dhatus are not well nourished, line of treatment described in ayurveda for obesity is shamana and the shodhana chikitsa. In shamana chikitsa langhan is one of the treatments which is done. Second is ruksha udvartan (it is the dry powder medicated message) and other lines of treatment are physical exercises, yoga asanas like bhujangasana, dhanurasana, naukasana etc. In shodhana chikitsa some herbal drugs help like guduchi, mustak, sunthi, amla etc. By doing lifestyle changes like mild to moderate physical activities, avoid junk food, avoid overeating etc.
