Abstract

Sella syndrome is a damaged pituitary gland. It is called an empty sella due to crushed status or shrunken size of pituitary, which gives it a shrunken size. Its prevalence is 8-30 percent among the general population. Females are more affected than males. Empty sella syndrome is a damaged pituitary gland. Either the gland has shrunk or has been crushed and flattened making it look like an empty sella on MRI scan. In this article we will discuss partial empty sella syndrome and its ayurvedic aspect.

Introduction

In this condition the pituitary gland shrinks or flattens. Pituitary gland is an important gland to manage the functions of the body. On MRI an empty sella turcica is seen in the condition of sella syndrome. If in case it is partially visible on MRI it can be stated as Partial empty sella syndrome. Pituitary is located in the sella turcica at the base of the brain.

Causes

The exact cause of this syndrome is unknown. It can be congenital. Some individuals suffering from this problem are associated with partial empty sella syndrome and can be born with a tear in the diaphragm. Following are the few possible causes of Partial empty sella syndrome.

  • Trauma in Head
  • Infection
  • Pituitary Tumors
  • Radiation Therapy or surgery in the area of the pituitary gland conditions related to the brain or pituitary gland, such as Sheehan syndrome, intracranial hypertension, neurosarcoidosis, or hypophysitis.

Risk Factor

Women are more prone to this condition. Women who are middle aged, having high blood pressure and suffering from obesity are at more risk. Lack of symptoms may lead to an undiagnosed case. Thus gender, age, B.P is the major risk factors.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based to check the location and status of the pituitary gland. Following diagnostic criterion can be used:

  1. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scan– Powerful magnets and radio waves can be used to check the images of the inside brain.
  2. Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan– In this investigation X ray is done from several angles to create a more complete picture.

Treatment Based on the Type of Empty Sella

The treatment of empty sella syndrome is not specific. In case if there is impaired ovary function due to higher levels of prolactin then it is important to manage the prolactin levels.
