Treatment of Leptospirosis in Humans – Herbal Remedies

Abstract

“Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet” it’s a very beautiful line which is applicable to almost all the animals which are domestic or can be kept at home. We all know that animals are adorable and they are born as who they are and we have to accept it. They live with greater peace than people do. Most of the animal lovers understand this thing but there is one more truth that diseases, bacterias and viruses do not spare animals also and these diseases, bacterias and viruses can spread from host animals to the humans too. This article is all about one such disease and its name is leptospirosis. The details of this condition along with symptoms, diagnosis and at last its Ayurvedic management is also mentioned.

Leptospirosis in Humans

Introduction

Leptospirosis is a disease which is caused by the bacteria leptospira. Leptospira is a flexible, spiral shaped, gram negative spirochete with internal flagella. It enters the host’s body through mucous or through broken skin and thus results in bacteremia. Its spirochetes can affect multiple organs and the most common target is the central nervous system, kidneys and liver. The infective bacteria are then shed from kidneys in the form of urine and through the fecal matter or urine the infection can spread to humans as well.

Causes of Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis as mentioned before is a condition which has its impact on humans and animals both. But here in this article we will discuss the causes that cause this infection in humans. The causes are following:

Coming in contact with the urine of infected animals. The urine gets mixed with soil and water and this can survive in soil for months or much longer. Now, they get infected when they come in contact with such soil through skin cracks or through mucous membranes of eyes, mouth or nose.

Symptoms of  Leptospirosis

Humans have following Symptoms of Leptospirosis:

  • Headache which can be mild to severe
  • Vomiting or sensation to vomit
  • Skin rashes with fever
  • Fever with chills
  • Jaundice can also be there as a symptom
  • Diarrhea of varying frequency
  • Pain in muscles

Explaining Symptoms, it’s Important to Discuss two Phases of Leptospirosis.

First phase

This phase is less severe and has symptoms like vomiting, fever, chills and muscle aches.

Second phase

This phase is severe and patients can have symptoms like liver failure, kidney failure, meningitis that is inflammation of layers of brain and spinal cord.

Diagnosis of  Leptospirosis

When a patient visits the physician with a lot of complaints like mentioned above then there are many conditions that struck the mind. Actually leptospirosis is quite similar to many infectious and viral conditions like influenza, malaria, dengue and others. So it is really important to rule out the condition. Usually an antigen detection test is done with help of ELISA and this test has proven helpful in diagnosing the condition. Molecular tests are PCR, which is a polymerase chain reaction test for diagnosing this condition.

Treatment in Allopathy Medicine

The treatment of leptospirosis depends on the administration of antibiotics. Antibiotics can be given orally and through intravenous routes.

Natural Cure For Leptospirosis

Abstract

Are you an avid pet lover? Do you go about ‘oohing’ and ‘awww’ing when you see a dog or a cat passing by and unable to keep your hands to yourself? We love our entertaining visits to the zoo right! Most of us prefer the companionship of an animal friend and rejoice in the mutual fondness of the same! We, irrespective of being an animal lover or not, may find ourselves coming in contact with animals in any setting, directly or indirectly which brings us to the concern of ‘zoonotic disorders’.

leptospirosis

Let’s learn about zoonotic diseases

Animals are also living beings, just like us, that live, hunt and most of the time, die in groups, so it might be no wonder that they often fall ill or die of diseases! These diseases are likewise in humans, maybe communicable or not. This may raise the obvious question, whether they can be transmitted to humans as well? Answer is yes, these creatures may carry within themselves harmful germs that perhaps could be spread to people and hence termed as zoonotic diseases. These so-called harmful microbes may be bacteria, fungi, viruses or even parasites and hence the variation is widely marked in the presenting diseases which could be even fatal!

Let’s talk about leptospirosis

Aforementioned, let’s continue discussing a specific and a widely known bacterial disease leptospirosis also known as Weil’s disease, and for this let’s introduce the bacterial villain here!

Leptospira interrogans is a gram negative spirochete bacterium and obviously causes the infection named leptospirosis, which can lead to potentially fatal infections of the kidney, liver, lung or even brain and heart! Clearly this zoonotic bacterium is not everyone’s favorite!

Biography of leptospira so that we can keep check on it

For starters, this bacterium is very species friendly and infects multiple species such as cats, dogs, horses or even human beings! Warm wet climate is their friend hence monsoon season should be looked out for and can very well invade through moist, softened skin or through mucous membranes!

Leptospira is a very motile bacterium and beware, it may survive in your environment for months! It viciously attacks the tissues of the species in order to commence the infection carefully by colonization! This bacterium then works its way down to the renal epithelial cells but unfortunately is our macrophages next meal! Leptospirans then may find any other animal in the surrounding area and infect them through the water they live in, i.e contaminated water!

Okay, so how do human beings get infected with this bacteria

This animal host, most of the time may show no signs of clinical symptoms and then release these bacteria through urine into the water! So next time when you go out swimming, kayaking, rafting etc.Watch out for these bacteria villains! So, human beings infect themselves with leptospirosis by contact with urine, fecal matter or any other body fluids of the host animal, or contaminated soil, water of the same!

Manifestations of leptospirosis in human beings

You might either experience zero to minimal symptoms or a plethora of symptoms that are really common such as high fever, nausea, chills, muscle aches, jaundice, red eyes, diarrhea, abdominal pain etc. but it can be identified neatly as it occurs in two stages or phases –The second phase is more severe and might include kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure which is usually followed by a recovery period from the first phase which is marked by fever, chills, headaches, or any of the symptoms previously mentioned.

Let’s fight this bacterium with a dash of ayurveda

The holistic science of ayurveda catalogs leptospirosis under a very important category of ‘krumiroga’

Krumiroga– a significant infection portrayed in ayurvedic science and is depicted exhaustively concerning its etiology, clinical elements and treatment. The term krumi denotes small creatures which live in the human body. Idea of krumi and their connection in the advancement of illness is portrayed in practically all ayurvedic samhita. Acharyas likewise portray krumi as an etiological component in different sicknesses.
