Adult Still’s Disease

Introduction

Adult Still’s disease is an inflammatory and very rare type of arthritis. This problem can be subdivided into Monophasic, intermittent, and chronic AOSD. Adult still’s disease is a form of systemic arthritis. This disease is named after British Physician Sir George Still. Adults with Still’s disease were reported for the first time in the 1800s and in medical literature in 1971. AOSD symptoms can be similar to other diseases so it can be difficult to diagnose. Hence appropriate care and diagnosis are important to improve the quality of life. It is also called Wissler-Fanconi syndrome.

The exact cause is still not clear. Yet some research shows that it can be caused by some bacterial or viral infection.

Ayurvedic Aspect

According to the ayurvedic point of view, it can be discussed on the basis of Aam. Aam as mentioned in the texts is an undigested metabolic waste. It is used as a common term for slimy, sticky, and toxic substances. Ama is created on the compromised metabolism of the body. When the ama dosha in the body accumulated in GIT it may give rise to a variety of disorders, one such class is an autoimmune class of diseases. There are a lot of causes of Aam dosha in the body like poor food combination, poor eating habits, impaired digestion, stressful routines, and many more. One such autoimmune disease is ADULT STILL DISEASE. Jwara (fever) is a prime sign of this disease.

The aam dosha accumulated in the body tends to vitiate the tridoshas (Vata, pitta, Kapha) associated with the body. The vitiated Vata dosha in the body leads to joint pain, pitta due to its properties leading to rashes and fever in the body (According to acharya charak there are 13 types of sannipata jwara and one type which can correlate with the fever of Adults still disease is Samsanipattika jwara) and the third one is Kapha dosha may lead to swelling in the body and swelling in lymph nodes too. So we can say aam dosha and associated doshas lead to autoimmune problems in the body and inflammation as well.

Ayurveda can be the best way to manage autoimmune problems. Shaman therapy and shodhana karma are the two aspects to deal with the aggravated aam. On the basis of shaman therapy patients with Adult’s diseases can use Kaishor Guggulu, manjisthadi kwath, Rasna saptaka kwatha, Guduchi churna, gokshura churna, sunthi churna, pippali Churna. These herbal medicines can be helpful to increase the Agni (digestive fire) and promotes deepan and pachan (Promotes digestion). One more way is the shodhana therapy which comprises panchakarma procedures. The associated panchakarma procedure is Virechankarma, Virechana is the best way to drain the toxins out of the body. The third important thing is lifestyle changes. It is important to follow a diet and lifestyle according to ritucharya and dincharya explained in the Ayurveda.
