Ayurvedic Treatment of Low Bone Density – Planet Ayurveda

ABSTRACT

Strong bones are very important for living a healthy life. Low bone density is the leading cause that results in the state of osteoporosis i.e. formation of holes in the bones. It will result in various pathological fractures such as when the fracture of a bone occurs due to pathological changes in the bone structure. A person with low bone density becomes prone to bone fractures; he/ she will get his/ her bone fractured even by a slight pressure by a very low amount of force e.g. falling while walking or even without any visible reason. The low bone density will be discussed in detail in the following article. Let’s discuss them in detail!

INTRODUCTION

The structure of the body is provided by the bones. There are a total 206 bones in the body. And each and every bone provides strength and structure to various parts of the body. To measure the health status of the bones, a bone mineral density test is performed. The bone mineral density test is used to measure the levels of calcium and other types of minerals that are present in an area of bone. The normal range of T- score is suggested to be -1.0 or more. The reports that result in lower values suggest a lower bone density. A lower bone density may worsen and result in osteoporosis i.e. condition of appearance of pores in the bone.

Low Bone Density

CAUSES

Normally, the formation of bones and reabsorption of bones are simultaneously ongoing processes. The bones start getting thinner as the age advances. This phenomenon occurs because the rate of formation of bones becomes slower than the rate of reabsorption of bones. The different causes that are estimated to cause low bone density are as follows- various types of eating disorders, chemotherapy, and extreme exposure to radiation. Low bone density may be a consequence of a disease. Women are more prone to it because of the continuous hormonal changes occurring in the body. Specially, the women around the age of menopause become more susceptible to thinner bones.

SYMPTOMS

There are no specific symptoms related to the condition. The person with low bone density will not experience pain or any other symptom because of reduced bone density. But he/ she will be at a higher risk of fractures of bone. The person breaks his/ her bone even when the force or the pressure suffered is very less. For example, he/ she might get his/ her bone fractured even if he/ she falls while walking.  The bone gets thinner as the bone density levels fall and hence the chances of fracture are increased.

DIAGNOSIS

To diagnose the bone density of an individual’s bones, a bone mineral density test is performed. The reports will consist of two parameters. The bone mineral density test is used to measure the levels of calcium and other types of minerals that are present in an area of bone. One of them is T-score and the other one is Z – score. The normal range of T- score is suggested to be -1.0 or more. Any value, lower than this, will suggest low bone density and bones thinner than normal.

TREATMENT

The management of the condition of low bone density will include various measures such as administration of Vitamin-D, Calcium and various lifestyle changes. The lifestyle changes will include adopting healthy food habits and other health improving habits. The person is suggested to increase the intake of healthy foods and inhibit the junk foods totally. He/ she is given a calcium complex. The patient is advised to avoid intake of alcohol and smoking. They are suggested to exercise on a regular basis. Exposure to sunlight is a good source for vitamin-D.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT

Ayurveda always has a very unique perspective on all the processes of the body. The concept of bones and bone density is discussed in a very interesting manner in the classical texts of Ayurveda. The bones can be correlated to Asthi in the Ayurvedic literature. The asthi is mentioned as the fifth dhatu that are rasa, rakta, masa, meda, asthi, majja, shukra. These are described as the elements that dharana (retention) the sharira. They are responsible for an appropriate healthy state of the body. The asthi is said to be a very hard component that contains vata (which can be correlated to space and hence pores) and majja dhatu (a type of liquid that can be correlated to bone marrow) inside it. There is a very unique concept of Ashraye- ashrayi bhava in the description of dhatus.

It explains that each of the seven dhatu is a home to another component of the body. And as the level of the component rises, the levels of that dhatu also rise. But there is an exception in the case of asthi. The asthi, as discussed above is supposed to be a sthana (home) for vata dosha, contrary to the principle, the levels of asthi and the vata are indirectly proportional. That means when the levels of vata rise, the levels of asthi decrease. So, in low bone density conditions, it can be estimated that the levels of the vata dosha are on a higher side which leads to decreased levels of the asthi component. This interprets that to raise the asthi component (i.e. can be correlated with bone) one should put efforts to decrease the levels of the vata dosha. There are various herbal drugs that are beneficial in decreasing the levels of vata dosha in the body such as Ashwagandha, agaru etc. The compounds like praval pishti, etc are known to improve the calcium levels of the body. Hence, help in improving the bone health of the individual. He/ she are advised to practice a healthy lifestyle and healthy food habits. He/ she is suggested to avoid habits that lead to disturbance in the levels of vata dosha.

CONCLUSION

The Ayurvedic principles consider that vata is the causative factor behind all the types of diseases. And as discussed above, the increased levels of vata will result in decreased levels of the asthi component. So, the target of treatment of low bone density will be to reduce the leve ls of vata dosha. Managing the proper levels of vata will lead to the healthy state of the body. So, as the Ayurvedic treatment emphasizes on treating the root cause of the condition it is capable of eliminating the disease permanently. In a nutshell, it can be concluded that with appropriate and timely management of vata levels of the body, the bone density can be increased in almost all of the cases leading to stronger bones.

Ayurvedic Treatment Of Low Bone Density With Natural Herbs!

Abstract

Bone density of a person is maximum at the age of 30 which varies according to the sex and genetic background. After 30, the bone minerals start resorbing into the blood due to the natural process of aging. As a result, the bone minerals and density start decreasing and bones become brittle and can break quickly. The mineral density of bone is measured through the Bone mineral density (BMD) test in which a T-score of between +1 and -1 is considered as normal bone density. Here in this article, we are going to discuss Low bone density and its Ayurvedic treatment.

Osteopenia & Osteoporosis

What is Low Bone density?

Low bone density, sometimes known as osteopenia, refers to the bone density that is lower than the normal peak density. Bone density is a measurement of how strong and dense the bones are. If your bone density is lower than the normal peak density, you are said to have low bone mineral density (osteopenia). A person with low bone density has a greater risk that, as time passes, he may develop osteoporosis.

Ayurvedic aspect of Low Bone Density?

In Ayurveda, a disease is explained on the basis of Tridosha (Vata,Pitta and Kapha). Any vitiation in the balance state of these three doshas leads to a disease state. There is no direct explanation of low bone density in Ayurveda’s text but it can be correlated with Asthi kshaya. Asthi dhatu or bone tissue is the dhatu (tissue) formed after Meda dhatu (fat or adipose tissue) and a precursor of the Majja dhatu (bone marrow). For the formation of proper healthy Asthi dhatu (bone tissue), its precursor dhatu should have formed perfectly or healthily. Asthi dhatu kshaya (bone tissue depletion) is closely related to low bone density. If there is any pathological increase or depletion of Asthi dhatu or bone tissue and its precursors, it results in the reduction in bone mineral density. This is due to the Agni Vikriti (metabolic disturbances) which leads to the Ama (endotoxins) formation which further blocks the Srotas (body channels) carrying nutrition and results in improper nutrition to the tissues including bone tissues (Asthi dhatu). If we talk about Dosha involvement then there is an aggravation of Vata dosha which depletes the asthi dhatu in the body causing low bone density.

What are the causes and Risk factors of Low Bone Density?

Low bone density is a common precursor of osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Some of the common causes and risk factors for low bone density are –

Post-menopausal women – After menopause decline of this estrogen production leads to bone mineral loss.

Genetics – most of the people are genetically predisposed to low bone density that results in osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Aging – bone mineral loss is a normal process of aging.

Lifestyle Factors

  • Lack of exercise or sedentary lifestyle
  • Excess alcohol consumption
  • Excessive smoking
  • Excessive stress
  • Crash dieting and eating disorders
  • Excessive tea, coffee, soda, chocolate or sports and energy drinks
  • Teenage pregnancy

Drugs, Medications and Medical Conditions

  • People who take long term steroids and are treated for Chronic inflammatory diseases such as Arthritis, Lymphoma, lupus, Leukemia, organ transplant, cancers are at high risk of lowered bone mineral density.
  • Anorexia and bulimia
  • Asthma
  • Vitamin B 12 deficiency
  • Cancers
  • Celiac disease
  • Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and other inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Malabsorption syndromes
  • Chronic kidney disease or patients on dialysis
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Cushing’s syndrome leading to excess steroids
  • Diabetes
  • Drugs used in epilepsy
  • Those with hyperthyroidism and with hyperparathyroidism
  • Those with Hypogonadism
  • Liver disease, lactose intolerance
  • Patients with Multiple myeloma, polio, Sickle Cell anemia, Osteo-genesis imperfecta, Skin disorders, Thalassemia.

Drugs that lead to lowered bone density include

  • Phenytoin
  • Drugs with Aluminum
  • Phenobarbital
  • Anticancer drugs
  • Immunosuppressants like Cyclosporine A
  • Methotrexate
  • Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole
  • Heparin
  • Lithium
  • Thyroid hormone replacement
  • Certain diuretics may also cause loss of bone mineral density

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Low Bone Density?

  • A person with low bone density has no symptoms.
  • There is no change or pain as the bone becomes thinner, although the risk of bone fractures increases as the bone becomes less dense.

What are the Complications of Low Bone Density?

If left untreated then it may cause following complications –

  1. Osteopenia
  2. Osteoporosis
  3. Brittle Bones

Diagnosis of Low Bone Density

Due to a lack of symptoms, it is difficult to diagnose low bone density until a person goes for a bone density test. The standard used to check the bone density is DEXA scan.

1. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)

The DEXA test measures bone density levels in your spine, hip, wrist, finger, shin, or heel. The result of a DEXA measure in T-score and Z score.

2. T score

T score is your bone density compared to the density of a 30-year-old person of the same sex or race. The values of T score indicates –

  • +1 to –1 indicates normal bone density.
  • –1 to –2.5 indicates osteopenia.
  • –2.5 or lower means osteoporosis.

3. Z score

The Z-score is the number of standard deviations above or below what’s normally expected for someone of the same age, weight, sex and ethnic or racial origin.

Treatment of Low Bone Density

In modern Medicine, the goal of treating low bone density is to prevent it from further developing into osteoporosis. They will give you calcium and vitamin D supplements along with some hormonal replacement therapy along with lifestyle changes.

Ayurvedic management of Low bone density

Ayurvedic management of low bone density is done with herbal medicines and some Panchakarma procedures like Vasti as there is an aggravation of Vata dosha so the herbs which pacify the vitiated vata dosha are used in the treatment along with ksheera Vasti, Sneha vasti and also the correction of Agni (digestive fire) is done along with the removal of toxins (Ama) from the body.
