Ayurvedic Aspect and Management of Kidney Disease in Dogs

Ayurveda is an ancient/traditional medicinal system of India. Ayurveda has been serving mankind from the ages perfectly. Ayurveda has two main objectives. One is maintaining the healthy status of healthy individuals and treating the diseased ones. Ayurveda defines the best treatment as the treatment that does not give rise to another complications or disease while managing the one. So this is what Ayurveda is all about and the excellence of the same. Ayurveda focuses on healthy eating and living a life according to the season running.

Coming to the ayurvedic veterinary system, there is no such correlation of the veterinary system mentioned but with the expertise in the same some ayurvedic experts have dealt with a number of animal diseases so nicely and positively and have mentioned about the same in their texts and literature. They have discussed the anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and treatment of certain veterinary diseases.

In India, animals are worshipped as many animals are considered as the vehicles of God and Goddesses. So taking care of them is indeed obvious and that also serves the purpose of humanity.

The correlation of kidney disease can be well established with the vrikka dosha.  The condition is related to the vitiation of tridosha particularly pitta dosha that causes the inflammation of the kidney cells. The dushya are mutra (urine), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscle) and meda (adipose). The vitiated srotas are medovaha and mutravaha srotas.

The management of the condition depends on the pacification of the pitta dosha. And cleansing the microchannels of that are blocked due to the vitiated kapha dosha.

The ayurvedic medicines that are effective in kidney disease are chandraprabha vati, shilajit, gokshuradi guggulu, vasttamayantaka ghrita, shilajit lauha, brihatyadi kashyam, amalaki rasayan, shatavari churna, trivrit lehya, triphala churna etc.

Kidney Disease in Dogs

INTRODUCTION

Kidney Disease is generally a term that we can use for various kinds of kidney diseases. These conditions include kidney failure, renal insufficiency, chronic renal failure, Chronic kidney disease and insufficient kidney function. But we considered all these terms in one word because all these conditions are associated with improper functioning of the kidneys. We can also use this term for more conditions such as Nephritis, Kidney stones, Nephro toxicosis, etc. If this condition is caught initially then it is termed as Acute Kidney Failure and it is very easily reversible. If your dog’s kidney functions are impaired that can lead to a domino effect which leads to various other health issues. So further let’s know the causes and signs of kidney disease in the dogs and what kind of precautions you can take for them along with its successful Ayurvedic management.

SOME FACTS ABOUT KIDNEY DISEASE IN DOGS

Following are some of the facts about Kidney Disease in Dogs

  1. Incidence of Kidney failure is more in Spitz than in Pug among all other breeds of dogs.
  2. Male dogs are more affected than female dogs.
  3. Incident rate is higher in dogs older than 5 years of age.
  4. Kidney disease in dogs can be corrected the same as that a doctor does in men.

CAUSES OF KIDNEY DISEASE IN DOGS

Kidney problems can be Acute as well as Chronic. The Acute problem occurs in several days but the chronic one happens slowly and over time. Causes of Acute and Chronic kidney failure may also vary, so let’s have a look on causes for both types of Kidney diseases.

Causes of Acute Kidney Disease

Acute Kidney failure mostly affects your dog if they ingest a toxin accidentally. These toxins may include household cleansers, antifreeze or bad food. Also if any urinary obstruction is there then it may also lead to the same. With obstruction in the urinary tract blood flow decreases which leaves the kidneys of the dogs less oxygenated and also more prone to various infections. It may also result from severe dehydration, snake bite, heat strokes, leptospirosis, etc.

Causes of Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease most commonly seen in the older dogs and no exact cause is pinpoint as its onset is slow. Early symptoms of CKD may be easily dismissed or overlooked because of their mild nature. Dental disease is one of the leading causes of CKD in the older dogs. In dental diseases bacteria grows on the teeth of dogs, entering the digestive system of the dog while drinking and eating. While the dog’s kidneys are designed to filter the waste, bacteria may lessen the kidney function as the time passes.

SIGNS OF KIDNEY DISEASE IN DOGS

You are able to see the following signs which can reflect your dog is suffering from the Kidney Disease

  • Drinking less or more water
  • Change in frequency and Volume of urination
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Loss of interest in interacting
  • Loss of interest in playing
  • Decreased appetite
  • Blood in urine
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Signs of dental disease such as smelly breath, pale gums, mouth ulcers, etc.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT KIDNEY DISEASE IN DOGS

First and the important thing is to keep your dogs away from the chemicals. Kidney disease can easily be prevented in dogs if you are taking full care of them. Must take preventive measures that your dog is away from the success of your household chemicals such as washroom cleaners, door cleaners, etc. The thing to remember is that the dogs are chewers from nature, so to keep the chemicals in a closed room is not enough. Also don’t even think the child proof seals on the chemicals are safe for the dog. As we all know dogs can easily chew plastics and drink those dangerous chemicals so it’s better to keep those chemicals out of reach of your dogs. Besides, chemicals also keep your dogs away from medications and other dangerous products such as raisins, grapes, contaminated water sources, and ibuprofen like drugs. Other than that dental hygiene is also really very important  as we all know chronic kidney disease is a result of poor dental hygiene.

DIAGNOSIS OF KIDNEY DISEASE IN DOGS

There are two common and basic tests for Kidney Disease in Dogs which is whole urinalysis and blood analysis. Urinalysis is done to evaluate the kidney functions in which low specific gravity of urine is one of the earliest signs of kidney failure. The other sign is proteinuria (protein in urine), so always keep detecting the urine of your dog to detect kidney disease. Whereas the blood reports show almost the condition of all internal organs. But for kidney disease two main terms to be noted, that are waste products present in the blood. So if blood is not properly purified by the kidneys, the levels of waste products get alleviated. These waste products are BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) and Creatinine, both indicating decreased functioning of kidneys. Other parameters that reflect kidney diseases are levels of globulin, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, red and white blood cells count.
