Essential Tremors

INTRODUCTION

Essential tremor is one of the conditions of the nervous system which leads to rhythmic and involuntary shaking. It may affect any part of the body but especially the hands while performing the simple tasks such as tying shoelaces, drinking water with glass, etc. Essential tremors are not commonly a dangerous condition but it may worsen with time passage and can’t be so serious in some patients. Sometimes it may be confused with the most common degenerating disorder – parkinsonism. This condition may occur at any age but the most common age group affected is the old age group. This is some brief view on essential tremors, let us know more about essential tremors.

SOME FACTS ABOUT ESSENTIAL TREMORS

  • Here are some interesting facts of essential tremors that one must know:
  • Among all the causes of tremors, essential tremors are one of the most common causes.
  • Even the best neurologist may get confused while diagnosing essential tremors.
  • The common condition with which one can confuse essential tremors is a  neurological condition – parkinsonism.
  • As per the national institute of neurological disorders and stroke, essential tremors experienced by people are 8 times more than that of parkinsonism.
  • This condition is not only restricted to old age, may occur in children and middle aged people, also this condition is diagnosed in the newborns.
  • ET is also considered as genetic, a newborn is at 50% risk of inheriting essential tremors if one of their parents is suffering from the same. This doesn’t mean there is no chance of developing essential tremors in others.
  • There is an estimation that 4 to 5% people face this condition in the age group of 40 – 60 years.
  • The incidence of this condition at the age of 60 or more than 60 is estimated from 6.3% to 9%.
  • People suffering from essential tremors feel frustrated and become disabled at worst or embarrassed with the best.
  • Big issue for the people with essential tremors is their quality of life. Daily activities such as drinking, feeding, writing and grooming become difficult.
  • People with ET feel too embarrassed in front of the public and keep them isolated in their homes which may lead to depression in some cases.

CAUSES OF ESSENTIAL TREMORS

About half cases of essential tremors result from DNA alteration, this is termed as familial tremor. There is not any clear cause of essential tremor in those people who are not having familial tremor. Beside the causes here are some risk factors of essential tremors:

  • Altered gene: The genetic variety of essential tremors is considered as autosomal dominant disorder. For the development of this condition there is a need for an altered gene from only one parent. If somebody’s parents’ gene is of essential tremor then they have a 50% chance of developing this condition.
  • Age: Age is another risk factor for essential tremors, as this condition is more common in the age group of 40 years and above.

SYMPTOMS OF ESSENTIAL TREMORS

Following are the symptoms experienced by a person who is suffering from essential tremors:

  • Tremors worsen with the movement.
  • More prominent on one side of the body.
  • Generally starts from one hand then affects the other hand.
  • There is a motion of head like yes- yes and no-no.
  • Tremors get aggravated by fatigue, emotional stress, temperature extremes and caffeine.

IS THIS ESSENTIAL TREMOR OR PARKINSONISM?

This fact should be cleared in the mind first that how we can differentiate essential tremors from parkinsonism. So following are some key points to be noted in mind to evaluate whether it is essential tremors or parkinsonism:

  • Timing of tremors: Essential tremors occur while using the affected part of the body but in case of parkinsonism it is prominent when the affected part is at rest.
  • Affected parts of the body: ET involves mainly the hands, voice and head. In case of Parkinson’s tremors start from the hands then affect the legs, chin and other parts of the body.
  • Associated conditions: ET does not cause any other health concern but on the other side parkinsonism may lead to slow movement, stooped posture and dragging of feet while walking. Sometimes the people with ET may develop different signs and symptoms such as unsteady walk.

So the above mentioned are some of the points that need to be made to clear the diagnosis of essential tremors and differentiate it from parkinsonism.

DIAGNOSIS OF ESSENTIAL TREMORS

To diagnose essential tremors a doctor may review the whole medical history, symptoms, family history and conduct a proper physical examination. There is not any medical test which may examine essential tremors. Mainly the diagnosing process involves ruling out any other medical condition. For clearing a diagnosis the doctor may suggests the following tests:

AYURVEDIC VIEW OF ESSENTIAL TREMORS

As per Ayurveda this condition is correlated to the condition of vepathu or kampavata. Kampavata is made up of two words, kampa means tremors and vata means aggravation of vata dosha. So the tremors occurring due to aggravation of vata dosha are known as kampavata. In the case of kampavata there is the predominance of chala guna that is one of the qualities of vata dosha that is responsible for all the movements in the body. When the chala guna gets aggravated a person is not able to control the movements and leads to kampavata that is known as essential tremors. Every human being responds differently to different tasks assigned or to different situations. There is a possibility that for some a particular situation is worth dying and for someone else it’s just a phase of life. So, we can say it’s about mindset as well. Nowadays such tests are also performed while selecting or hiring a candidate. You know every company wants a  serious and flexible employee and for that certain tests are generally done. This article is about one such testing technique and it is called a psychometric test. The article also has information about some ways or techniques to improve these test results through Ayurvedic ways.

psychometric-test

Introduction

Psychometric tests are certain scientific methods used to measure individuals’ mental capabilities and behavioural styles. These tests are designed so as to measure a candidate’s suitability for a role based on the required personality characteristics along with aptitude or cognitive abilities.  Basically these tests are used to identify whether a candidate’s personality and cognitive abilities or aptitude matches the requirement or not. Employers use these psychometric tests so as to collect information  or certain hidden aspects of the candidates which they generally are not able to extract from face to face interviews. Though some job applicants believe that psychometric tests are not a good measure to assess their real abilities, personality traits and suitability for the job.

Moving further let’s understand more about psychometric tests

Why are Psychometric Tests done?

  • As mentioned before they are done for assessing the abilities of a job candidate and are done by the employer.
  • Some candidates are in favour of these tests but others are biassed.
  • These tests are done by using standard methods of assessment and everyone is presented with the same questions and instructions for completing them.
  • Psychometric tests are very reliable as they help in predicting candidate performance and in most cases these test help in the accurate evaluation of applicants.

The next question that arises in many minds is that what are these psychometric tests? So, let’s enlighten ourselves with the relevant information.

Types of Psychometric Testing

There are mainly two types: Personality and Test Aptitude Test.

1. Personality Test

The purpose of the personality test is to explore your area of interest, analysis, values, motivations and also about how your character is best for the required role. Generally your emotions, behaviours and relationships are analysed in various situations.

On the other hand the aptitude test holds some other purpose.

2. Aptitude Test

This is done to assess your cognitive ability and analyse whether you got the right skills or not. Under the examination conditions you will be given one minute for each multiple choice question. Your intelligence levels are compared to a standard meaning by the certain score you achieve and the score required to pass the examination. The most common tests included under aptitude testing are as follows:

  1. Diagrammatic Reasoning
  2. Error Checking
  3. Numerical Reasoning
  4. Spatial Reasoning
  5. Verbal Reasoning

Every type of aptitude test has its own importance. So, let’s discuss every test in detail.

1. Diagrammatic Reasoning

Diagrammatic reasoning tests are commonly used aptitude tests which are used by recruiters so as to assess a candidate’s ability. Here, ability is referred to as logical thinking and solving complex problems. The diagrammatic reasoning is a test for checking high level problem solving abilities and logical reasoning as well. Mostly done  when the candidate is applying for management consulting, engineering and finance. The skills and abilities mostly assessed during diagrammatic reasoning tests are as follows:

  • Analytical ability
  • Decision Making
  • Logical and abstract reasoning
  • Critical thinking ability
  • Problem solving ability

 2. Error Checking

Error checking includes data checking tests which measures how quickly and accurately one can detect errors. These are common for data and clerical vacancies. Error checking also includes fault diagnosis tests as well which is generally done to rule out the approach of the candidate towards various problems logically.

3. Numerical Reasoning

These tests are done to assess your interpretation of charts, graphs, data and statistics along with investigating your abilities to deal with numbers quickly and accurately. Numerical reasoning tests may also challenge knowledge rates, trends, ratios, currency conversions and percentages.

4. Spatial Reasoning

Spatial reasoning is the ability to think and manipulate objects present in three dimensions. These skills are necessary parts of art, physical education along with maths and science.

5. Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning includes understanding written information along with evaluation of arguments and communication of concepts is also tested here. This is done to test your ability to think constructively. Some tests also access your spelling and grammar.

As now we know all about psychometric tests. Then the major question arises: how can Ayurveda help? Moving further let’s understand this.

Enhancing your Psychometric test results with Ayurveda

The psychometric skills can be enhanced well by focus. For reaching such focus one can try focused meditation. Focused meditation is one of the types of meditation. Let’s understand more about it.

Focused Meditation

Focused meditation style allows you to focus your attention on an object, sound or sensation rather than trying to achieve a clear mind without a specific focal point. In focused meditation you try to focus on something as a way of staying in the present moment and slowing down the inner dialogue. The classic meditation is where you focus on nothing but in focused meditation you focus on one thing but still remain in the present.

How does it benefit you?

Focused meditation is known to give you many benefits.

First thing the top most of them is enhancing your learning skills, learning concentration and increasing focus. This type of meditation also helps in reducing stress, and anxiety. It also helps in improving memory and span of giving attention to things. It builds a stronger immune system and greater physical and psychological resilience as well. This helps in sleeping better too.

Second thing that can help in focusing, enhancing intelligence or improving all over cognitive abilities is swaran prashan. It is something that helps in building a strong immune system of a child as well as has its greater impact on the child’s brain as well. The swaran prashan is done with gold cax or swarna bhasma mixed with honey and cow’s ghee. This also contains herbal extract of vacha (Acorus calamus), brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) and many others.

Gold is one of the seven metals which are recognised as pure metals and are mainly used in preventive and curative purposes. The benefits it provides to children that consume swarna prashana are as follows:

  • It improves their intellectual abilities
  • Has effect on digestion and metabolism
  • Enhances Physical strength and immunity
  • It is also having an impact on fertility and life span as well.

Now thirdly, if you are not a child anymore and want help to improve your cognitive abilities then Ayurvedic herbs can totally help you. Ayurvedic Herbs like brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), mandukaparni (Centella asiatica) and shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis).  These four herbs are kept under the category of medhya rasayana and give great results by enhancing all types of cognitive abilities.

Conclusion

There are many things in our day to life which are correlated to our cognitive abilities. But we don’t know how to enhance our abilities either on a regular basis or especially for enhancing the psychometric test results. Everyone wants a great job but sometimes you have to go through this long chain of tests and you know that you won’t get the job of your dreams if you don’t work hard for it. So the above mentioned ways can help you and are even useful to make your child so good that he or she will not have to struggle to enhance their learning abilities.  In case of any queries kindly visit https://www.planetayurveda.com/
