Abstract

Severe combined immunodeficiency is a rare genetic disorder due to disturbed functional development of B cells and T cells caused by genetic mutations that leads to alteration in clinical presentation. It is also known as bubble boy disease or bubble baby disease and swiss-type agammaglobulinemia. Severe combined immunodeficiency is a fatal condition without gene therapy or transplant of stem cells. There are approximately 13 kinds of genetic defects that may lead to SCID. These defects further cause extreme prone to serious infections. Infants with 80% SCID have no family-related history of this disease. So, today we will read about severe combined immunodeficiency in brief in this article.

Introduction

It is a rare condition caused by genetic mutations that leads to alteration in function and development of immune cells. Newborns with severe combined immunodeficiency look healthy at the time of birth but are extremely susceptible to serious infections. This is a fatal condition until or unless newborns receive treatment for immune restoration like gene therapy, enzyme therapy, or hematopoietic stem cells.

Ayurvedic overview

In Ayurveda, we can correlate this disease with anuvanshik vyadhi (inherited disease) and other is oja kshaya (immune deficiency). Anuvanshik vyadhi is developed in a person by birth due to deformity in beej dosha (sperm and ovum deformity). Oja means resistance to diseases or immunity against diseases is of two kinds: one which attenuates the manifested disease and other variety prevents the manifestation of diseases. Factors which contributes for oja (immunity) are normal doshas (vata, pitta and kapha), equilibrium state of dhatu, normal agni, patency of srotas etc are the factors which supports the equilibrium state of all physiological parameters. Ojas is the essence of rasadhi dhatus and it is also called bala (strength).

Ojas undergoes decrease due to injury, Tissue depletion, anger, grief, worry, exertion, hunger etc are resulting into the flowing out from the dhatus and getting associated with tejas and instigated by vata, which gives various discomfort to the body.
