As per Ayurveda Dupuytren’s contracture is caused due to accumulation of toxins, i.e. ama in the body along with the vitiation or imbalance of the Vata dosha. Due to the disturbed digestion (for any reason) digestive fire (agni) weakens which leads to building up of the ama in the body. This results in stiffness of the tissues and eventually  formation of knots.

RISK FACTORS OF DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE

There are certain factors which increases the risk of developing Dupuytren’s contracture in a person:

  • People above the age of 50 years are more likely to develop it
  • Men as compared to women are more at risk of getting the contracture and also severe than women
  • Dupuytren’s contracture is a rare phenomenon but it tends to run in families and anyone having relatives suffering from it are more likely to get it than the one not having any family history
  • Smoking increases the risk of Dupuytren’s contracture owing to the fact that it causes microscopic changes in the blood vessels.
  • Alcohol consumption is also associated with increased risk of Dupuytren’s contracture
  • People suffering from diabetes are at risk of developing it as well.

CAUSES OF DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE

The exact cause behind Dupuytren’s contracture is not known however the role of genes tends to play a role in the background and this disorder runs in the family. And the risk factors discussed above found to be present in most of the cases.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE

Dupuytren’s contracture is a gradually developing condition and hence the development of signs and symptoms is also gradual.

  • Thickening of the skin on palm
  • Gradually knots of hardened tissues start to appear on the thickened skin of the palm
  • Usually these nodules are not tender but in some cases they may be painful to touch
  • Gradually over the years these knots start to tighten, pulling fingers towards the palm
  • Ring finger and the last fingers are usually affected causing them to curl up or pulled sideways
  • Generally one hand is affected, in rare cases both the hands will get affected

DIAGNOSIS OF DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE

Hardened tissue in the form of knots and curled up fingers are usually the initial basis of diagnosis when your doctor examines the hand. Further there are some tests like table top tests in which a patient is asked to put the hand on the table and rest it completely. In case of Dupuytren’s contracture patient is not able to keep it flat indicating contracture of the tissue. Introduction

Sporotrichosis is a condition which is associated with fungal infection and the main causative organism in this condition is sporothrix schenckii fungus. The fungus is usually found on hay, rose thorns, twigs, soil and moss. This infection generally affects the skin of the person. Most commonly this occurs in the patients who are suffering from autoimmune conditions like AIDS. This condition occurs by the direct contact of the person with this fungus through the environment. The condition usually takes time of a few days to few months to occur usually. Further we are going to discuss the symptoms, causes, diagnosis, Ayurvedic view and its herbal management to get rid of this condition effectively.

Symptoms of Sporotrichosis

This condition usually affects the skin of the person and all the symptoms usually seen on the skin. The first symptom patients notice on their skin is a firm nodule (bump) on skin. The color of this bump deflicted from pink to tint purple. And this bump is usually painless and sometimes mild tender. After times pass away the nodule may change into an ulcer (open sore) and this open sore drains out a clear fluid. Usually the bumps occur along the lymph nodes and may last for years if left untreated.

Causes of Sporotrichosis

As we discussed earlier, it is caused by the fungus named sporothrix schenckii. The condition occurs when the spores of this fungus are forced into the skin with the sharp stick or rose thorn or the infection may occur with the direct contact of fungus to the unbroken skin. Rarely a person may catch the fungus  with contact to the colts, dogs or horses. And very uncommonly this fungus will be ingested or inhaled and lead to the infection in other parts of the body rather than the skin.

Diagnosis of Sporotrichosis

It is must to diagnose this condition as it may mimic any other skin infection also and it is must to differentiate it from other skin infections to cure the condition with proper treatment. Usually a biopsy of skin nodules is done and must differentiate from other infections such as cowpox, herpes, leprosy and many other skin infections that are confused with the symptoms of  sporotrichosis.

According to Ayurveda sporotrichosis it can be correlated to dadru kushta, generally kushta is considered as all types of skin diseases. So the sporotrichosis skin disease is correlated to the dadru kushta (it is the skin disease caused by the fungus). It is caused by the dosha vitiation due to various environmental factors. Kushta is generally of two types- kshudra kushta and maha kushta and Dadru kushta comes under kshudra kushta. According to acharya charaka dosha predominance in dadru kushta is kapha and pitta and is characterised by kandu (itching sensation), raga (redness), pidaka (nodules), mandal (circular patches) and udgatama (elevated edges). Which means in dadru kushta there is circular elevated nodule-like formation that occurs on skin with redness and itching sensation. Further let’s discuss the Ayurvedic treatment of sporotrichosis.
