Abstract

Autoimmune disorders are the disorders when the immune system of the body identifies the own muscle/tissue/organ as foreign and attacks them. Then the functions of the targeted organ gets hampered and it results in the altered structure of the organ affected. Masticatory muscle myositis in dogs is an autoimmune inflammatory condition that affects the chewing muscles of the dogs and leads to swelling and pain in the same. Introduction

Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease in dogs affecting the muscles of the jaw. Signs include swelling of the jaw muscles and pain on opening the mouth. In chronic MMM there is atrophy of the jaw muscles, and scarring of the masticatory muscles due to fibrosis may result in inability to open the mouth (trismus). The condition is also known as eosinophilic myositis or atrophic myositis. This results when the immune system attacks the masticatory muscles of the dogs. The disease can  occur in any breed and can equally affect males and females. The average age of dogs with MMM is 3 years. • The management scenario is based on the usage of an immune-suppressive dose of corticosteroid medication.
• Early management of the condition with corticosteroid offers a chance of remission.
• The dosage of the corticosteroid can be tapered down as the condition of the dog stabilises. The certain side effects of prednisone, the most commonly used drug include excessive thirst, excessive appetite and increased urination despite increased intake of water.

Masticatory muscle myositis is a condition that makes the life of a dog pitiful and miserable. And the outlook of the affected patient depends on the extent of inflammation in the muscles and the response of the patient to the given treatment.
