FATTY LIVER AYURVEDIC OVERVIEW

Fatty liver refers to accumulation of excessive fat in the liver. In ayurveda it is termed as Yakrit Roga (Liver disease), many conditions come into Yakrit Roga, from simple steatosis to hepatomegaly to liver disease. They may be due to an imbalance of Pitta dosha. It helps in digestion of food. So we need to balance pitta dosha by flushing out toxins from the body. In contrast with kapha dosha which is known to be its cold and heavy qualities, it can reduce pitta efficacy in the liver when present in excess amounts. Ayurvedic medications are best and effective. Regular practice of Yoga and Pranayam is preferable for preventive and curative management of NAFLD. Yoga and pranayam are interlinked with ayurveda. Yoga is one of the best philosophies that means for self improvement by gaining the full potential of one’s body, mind and soul. Pranayam (Breathing exercise), Asana (Yogic postures), Dhyana (Meditation) are the popular techniques. Ayurvedic Treatment For Liver Failure

ABSTRACT

The Liver is an important organ that serves a variety of key purposes in the human body. The Liver is essential for the body’s nutrient metabolism, detoxification of toxic compounds, and production of bile, which aids in fat digestion. In addition, it aids in the breakdown and recycling of red blood cells, controls blood clotting, and stores vitamins and minerals. The Liver has an amazing capacity for regeneration; it can heal from injury and even partially replace destroyed tissue. For general health, it is important to maintain Liver health with a balanced diet, frequent exercise and many other ways which we will learn in this article. Let’s see what are the causes, how you can analyse if there is something wrong with your Liver and how you can make your Liver Healthy with Ayurvedic Treatment for Liver Failure by Planet Ayurveda.

Liver Failure

INTRODUCTION

When the Liver is unable to carry out its vital tasks, it develops liver failure, a dangerous and perhaps fatal illness. A dangerous medical disease known as liver failure occurs when the liver is unable to perform its normal functions. The liver is essential for many body processes, such as eliminating toxic substances, making vital proteins, and facilitating digestion. These functions are compromised when it fails, which can result in a variety of health issues. Liver failure can happen in two ways: either immediately (Acute Liver Failure) or gradually over time (Chronic Liver Failure). Acute Liver Failure manifests quickly, frequently in a few days or weeks. On the other hand, chronic liver failure develops over several months or years.

CAUSES OF LIVER FAILURE

As we discussed above Liver Failure is of two types, lets see what are the causes for both types of Liver Failure

1. Acute Liver Failure

  • Exposure to chemicals
  • Medication overdoses especially acetaminophen
  • Severe viral infections such as hepatitis A, B, C, etc.
  • Autoimmune Hepatitis
  • Wilson’s Disease
  • Septic Shock
  • Biliary Obstruction

2. Chronic Liver Failure

  • It occurs if conditions such as Fatty Liver, Cirrhosis, Obesity, Hepatitis, etc left untreated
  • Long-term Alcohol Use
  • Long Term use of NSAIDs

SYMPTOMS OF LIVER FAILURE

Let’s see what symptoms can be present in case of both types of Liver Failure.

1. Acute Liver Failure

  • Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin, eyes, urine and stools
  • Abdominal Pain (Mainly in Right Hypochondriac Region)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bleeding or bruising readily
  • Edema in Legs, Abdominal edema or Ascites
  • Confusion

Since Acute Liver Failure can develop into potentially fatal consequences very quickly, prompt medical attention is essential.

2. Chronic Liver Failure

Mostly present with the same symptoms as Acute Liver Failure, but the intensity and number of symptoms increase with time. On the other hand in Acute Liver Failure patients represent sudden onset of symptoms with severe intensity. Serious consequences can arise from either form of liver failure. These include liver cancer, portal hypertension, which can lead to variceal haemorrhage, and hepatic encephalopathy, a condition in which poisons accumulate in the brain and cause confusion or a coma.

DIAGNOSIS OF LIVER FAILURE

Diagnosis of Liver Failure can be done in following ways

  • Blood Tests : Which includes LFTs such as Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT). Other than that Bilirubin levels, Albumin levels, Prothrombin Time (PT) and International Normalised Ratio (INR), Hepatitis Panel, Serum Ammonia, Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) and Alpha-fetoprotein.
  • Imaging Studies : Ultrasonography (Whole Abdomen), CT-Scan (Whole Abdomen), MRI (Whole Abdomen), Elastography or Fibroscan, Hepatic Angiography, Endoscopy, Liver Biopsy, etc.

AYURVEDIC OVERVIEW OF LIVER FAILURE

According to Ayurveda, abnormalities in the body’s doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and the general condition of Agni (digestive fire) and Dhatus (tissues) are typically used to explain Liver Failure. The Pitta dosha, which controls metabolism, digestion, and transformation, is closely associated with the Liver.

Liver failure as per Ayurveda

  • Pitta Imbalance : The Pitta dosha is the primary impact on the liver, often referred to as “Yakrit” in Ayurveda. Excessive heat, inflammation, and metabolic disruptions brought on by an unbalanced Pitta might result in liver failure or dysfunction. Indigestion, acidity, irritability, and jaundice are possible signs of Pitta imbalance.
  • Digestive Fire, Agni : Digestion fire, also known as agni, is essential to good health. The Liver’s ability to function may be impacted by weak or disrupted Agni, which can result in poor digestion and the buildup of Ama (toxic wastes). Poor digestion, bloating, and the production of toxins that can strain the Liver are indicators of compromised Agni.
  • Ama or Endotoxins : Ama, which is produced by insufficient digestion, can build up in the body and have an impact on the liver. Ama is regarded in Ayurveda as the root cause of numerous illnesses, especially liver-related conditions. A coated tongue, bad breath, and overall lethargy are signs of Ama.
  • Dhatu (Tissues) : The Rasa Dhatu (Circulatory Fluids) and Rakta Dhatu (Blood Tissues) are connected to the Liver. Damage or imbalance to these Dhatus can result in problems with the Liver, which can affect general health and energy. Causes of Imbalance of Rasa Dhatu (Circulatory Fluids): Overeating, Food Heavy to Digest, Over-unctuous Food, Cold Food, Mental Stress, etc. Causes of Imbalance of Rakta Dhatu (Blood Tissue): Acidic or pungent foods, too much salty or alkaline foods, excessive intake of curd, taking meals during indigestion, etc.

The origin and severity of Liver Failure determine the course of treatment. If the damage is irreparable, drugs to promote Liver function and control symptoms may be necessary in an acute instance. Liver transplantation may also be necessary. Treating the underlying cause, such as hepatitis, or controlling alcohol consumption, is essential for chronic Liver Failure. It’s common advice to adopt new lifestyle habits, such as eating a balanced diet and abstaining from chemicals that damage the Liver. In the end, Liver Failure emphasises the need of Liver health and prompt treatment. Routine examinations and surveillance, especially for individuals with elevated risk, can impede the advancement to more severe phases and enhance results.
