Herbal Remedy For Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Abstract

Hearing is one of the important abilities that helps in receiving all the sounds and many of the people having hearing impairment. This not only affects the person suffering from the loss of hearing but also people surrounding them including relatives as well as friends. As it’s one of the crucial parts that helps in communicating and speaking with others. Along with that it increases the ability of understanding and developing intelligence. One of the main nerves that helps in hearing is the vestibulocochlear nerve by sending information to the inner ear from the brain. Disturbance of the nerve can lead to a severe problem known as Sensory Neural Hearing loss and in this article we are going to discuss it in detail along with its herbal treatment.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

What is Sensorineural Hearing Loss

It is the type of hearing loss which results from the disturbance in the inner organ or the 8th cranial nerve also known as the vestibulocochlear nerve. In 90 percent of the cases the patient suffers from loss of hearing which could be moderate, severe, mild, total or profound. One of the main causes behind the sensory neural hearing loss is damage caused to the cochlear hair cells. It could happen during the birth where hair cells grow abnormally or are damaged while growing up due to some incident. These causes could be ototoxic drugs, infection or genetic mutation. One of the commonly seen symptoms of SNHL is difficulty in understanding voices on the phone or some of the voices seem too loud and they find that the other person is mumbling in spite of speaking loudly. There is no proven treatment for SNHL but can be managed through a few medications.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of SNHL

As our inner ear is not capable of directly examining through the instruments so the disease can be diagnosed through the audiometric testing and clinical features. Most of the patients suffering from SNHL show symptoms like hearing loss or 90 percent show diminished hearing, 49 percent show tinnitus or also said ringing inner ear and some show vertigo like problems. Other symptoms include

▪ Muffling while conversation
▪ Trouble in having a conversation with a group of people.
▪ Difficulty in hearing the high-pitched sound
▪ Problems in balancing the body
▪ Always hearing the buzzing or ringing sound in the ear
▪ Dizziness

What Causes SNHL

Here are some of the causes leading to Sensory Neural Hearing Loss and it divided into two categories including Acquired as well as Congenital

Acquired SNHL

This means that this type of hearing problem might be present since the time of birth, or maybe present at later stages of life. This includes

  • Loud Noise:- This is when hearing loss is induced by the loud noise like getting exposed to the noise caused by firing a gun or explosion. If you wear earrings after going to a concert then your hearing power is at risk.
  • Aging:- Another most common cause for the sensory loss of hearing is growing older which is commonly known as presbycusis. Almost everyone around the age of 65 to 74 and this can typically be seen in both the ears.
  • Tumors:- Some of the ones are cholesteatoma and acoustic neuroma where skin grows abnormally in the middle ear which causes hearing impairment.
  • Infection:- Measles, mumps and meningitis are the common type of viral infection which can result in sensory hearing loss.
  • Acoustic trauma:- This can be due to getting hit on the head or by loud voice and many of the veterans are commonly suffering from this as they are being exposed to firearms or jet engines.

Congenital SNHL

It is the type where the loss of hearing is caused during the pregnancy but is very rarely seen. Some of the other common causes include maternal diabetes, premature birth, gentical problem, loss of oxygen while giving birth or some kind of infectious disease passed on to a child by mother like rubella.

SNHL Diagnosis

It is very important to know the medical history as well as physical examination of the patient before diagnosing the disease.

During the physical examination different volumes of sounds are played to the patient. A test is performed with the help of a tunic fork where the vibration heard by the ear is measured.

Audiometry test is also one of the main tests that can determine the levels of hearing in the patient with SNHL.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Vocal Cord Palsy

Abstract

The vocal cord which is also known as Vocal folds that are responsible for the production of sound or speech. The vocal cords are located within the larynx at the top of the bacteria. These are the two bands of smooth muscle tissue found in the larynx (Voice box). The sound from vocal cords is produced when these cords vibrate after the air passes through the cords from the lungs. Then this sound is transferred or sent to the throat, nose and mouth. The sound of each person’s voice is different and decided by the size and shape of the vocal cords. Some of the vocal cord disorders are laryngitis, vocal nodules, vocal polyps, and vocal cord paralysis. Here in this article, we will discuss one of the vocal cord disorders and that is vocal cord palsy and its Ayurvedic treatment in detail.

Introduction

The vocal cord palsy is the paralysis of the vocal cords. It occurs when the nerve impulses to the voice box are disrupted. The disruption of nerve impulses results in the paralysis of the vocal cord muscles. It can affect the ability of speech and even breathing. Palsy means complete or partial absence of vocal cord movement. Two nerves are involved in this disease; one is recurrent laryngeal nerve and superior laryngeal nerve.

Vocal Cord Palsy
Ayurvedic Aspect of Vocal Cord Palsy

We can correlate this disease with Swarbheda or swarakshaya. Acharya Sushruta individually mentioned this disease in Uttaratantra chapter. Acharya Sudhruta stated that when a person proclaims with high pitch, reading in louder voice, injury, improper use of voice, consumption of excessive cold food items then the doshas are exacerbated and invade or localize in the vocal cord. This further causes modification in the vocal cord functioning. The ability of talking or speech is lost partially or completely as a result of this impairment of voice box.

Types of Vocal Cord Palsy

The vocal cord palsy is of two types i.e. Unilateral vocal cord palsy and bilateral vocal cord palsy

  1. Unilateral vocal cord palsy: in this type, the paralysis occurs on the one side of the vocal cord and it presents with dysphonia, difficulty in swallowing, shortness of breath. It occurs when there is damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
  1. Bilateral vocal cord palsy: In this type, both sides of vocal cords are affected and it denotes reduced or absent movement of both vocal cords that resulting from the impaired function of the vagus nerve or its distal branch that is recurrent laryngeal nerve.

Etiology/Cause

In this disease, the nerve impulses to the voice box or vocal cord are disrupted, further resulting in the paralysis of the vocal cord muscles. The exact is not now but some factors that are responsible for vocal cord palsy are:

  • Injury to the vocal cord during surgery
  • Neck or chest injury
  • Stroke
  • Tumor
  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease
  • Infections like Lyme disease, Epstein-Barr virus, and herpes

Clinical features/Signs and symptoms

In most of the cases only one side of the vocal cord is paralysed. Paralysis of both sides is rare but if it occurs then it can be a serious condition. This can cause significant problems with breathing and swallowing. The symptoms of vocal cord palsy include:

  • A breathy quality to the voice
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Inability to speak loudly
  • Noisy breathing
  • Loss of vocal pitch
  • Ineffective coughing
  • Frequent throat clearing
  • Choking or coughing while swallowing food, drink, or saliva
  • The need to take frequent breaths while speaking
  • Loss of your gag reflex

Risk factors

Factors that may increase the risk of developing vocal cord palsy include
