What is Behcet Syndrome?- Causes, Symptoms and Ayurvedic Treatment

Abstract

In our day to day life, we come across many health problems for which we could hold responsible some external factors like dietary, bacterial, viral or some other pathogen. But there are some diseases which do not have a cause. Such diseases are due to a response from within the body where the body’s own defence mechanisms start attacking it. In this article, we are going to cover one such disease which is called behcet Syndrome.

Introduction

This is a medical condition which is characterised by the inflammation of the blood vessels. This is an autoimmune disorder and chronic in nature. It might go for a while, but symptoms reappear after sometime. Commonly affected areas are the mouth, eyes and genitals. Inflammation of the blood vessels (vasculitis) is the main pathophysiology of Behcet Syndrome. Something is to be noted that this condition is not contagious i.e it does not spread by means of contact. Though it affects both the sexes, the severity is more in men.

Causes

There are no specific causes for the behcet syndrome. It is believed that this is an autoimmune response of the body where the immune system starts attacking its own body. Some research suggests the mutation of HLA-B gene is also responsible for alteration in the protein synthesis, a particular protein which distinguishes between antigen and the body’s own cells. This leads to an autoimmune response.

Behcet’s Syndrome

Symptoms

Following are the symptoms of Behcet Syndrome. Symptoms depend on the site involved.

1. Mouth

  1. The very first manifestation of Behcet disease is soreness in the mouth.
  2. This sore resembles the canker sore and heals on its own within a week or two.

2. Eyes

  1. Red eye, blurred vision, swollen eye (Uveitis).
  2. Sensitivity to light.

3. Genitals

  1. Painful sores on the scrotum or the vulva.

4. Nervous system

  1. Inflammation of the vessels of the brain which might be manifested by headache, dizziness, fever etc.

Diagnosis

There are no particular diagnostic tools available for Behcet disease. Your physician will rely upon the present complaints and their history. As the mouth sores are the commonest occurrence in Behcet disease, it is mandatory that there must be three recurrences of mouth sores in the last 12 months. Along with this, one of the two signs/symptoms should be present that is genital sores or swollen eyes.

Treatment in Allopathy

There is no specific treatment available for this medical condition in allopathy. According to the severity of the pain of sores, the doctor could prescribe painkillers to manage the flare. In some cases, the allopathic doctors prescribe steroids which suppress the immune response of the body, which in turn causes more harm to the body by making it more prone to other diseases.

Ayurvedic point of view in Behcet Syndrome

In Ayurveda, every human organism is believed to be made up of five elements of the universe, i.e Air, Space, Water, Fire and Soil. It is also mentioned in Ayurveda that the digestive fire has an important role to play in one’s life. This digestive fire is referred to as Agni in ancient Ayurvedic texts. This very digestive fire is responsible for maintaining and running different life processes. But, due to the altered lifestyle of this time, like eating unhealthy foods, consuming excess sugars/salt in diet, refined oils, junk food there is an accumulation of Ama in the body. This accumulated Ama (endotoxin) impairs the agni which results in a number of diseases. With time, this ama blocks the channels (srotas) of the body which triggers an autoimmune response. Therefore, the treatment of Behcet syndrome would be based on reducing this accumulated Ama in the body.

Conclusion

We have seen that Behcet syndrome is an outcome of an autoimmune response which is a result of blocked channels (srotas). Though a permanent treatment from the root cause is available in Ayurveda, prevention is always better than cure. Therefore, to avoid this accumulation of endotoxins(Ama) in our system, certain lifestyle changes are needed to be made. This will include timely consumption of food, no overeating, limited use of salt and sugar, green leafy vegetables, fruits, regular exercise and meditation. With such changes we could prevent autoimmune diseases successfully.

Cheyletiellosis Ayurvedic Treatment With Herbal Remedies

Abstract

Cheyletiellosis, sometimes known as ‘walking dandruff,’ is a skin disorder caused by mites called Cheyletiella spp. This mite is spread by dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals that have been infected with it. The mite resides in the skin’s superficial layers and on the skin’s surface. Adults, juvenile stages, and eggs of mites spend the majority of their time on the skin. They may live in the environment for many days. Furthermore, a person may be infected with Cheyletiella yasguri mites by stroking an infected dog, which is the natural host for that kind of mite.

Cheyletiellosis

Introduction

Cheyletiellosis is a rare but extremely infectious skin parasite caused by Cheyletiella spp. mites in dogs, cats, people, and rabbits. The look of the huge, white mites as they crawl over skin and hair, as well as the severe scaling that accompanies the condition, has earned it the nickname “walking dandruff.” Due to better flea control treatments, cheyletiellosis has become uncommon.

Symptoms of Walking Dandruff

The dandruff-like scales that grow on the skin and the obvious movement of the mites on the skin give this illness its name. The mites may cause your dog to scratch, bite, or rub the afflicted regions excessively. Other indications of an infestation include:

  • Hair loss is a common problem.
  • A rash that is red and lumpy.
  • Skin that is flushed.
  • Skin that is swollen.
  • Cheyletiella yasguri – These skin mites mostly attack dogs’ backs, causing peeling, scabbing, and itching, but they also affect people’ arms, trunks, and buttocks.
  • Demodex canis – The most common dog mite, Demodex canis resides in the animal’s hair follicle and is normally innocuous until the immune system is weakened and they reproduce out of control.
  • Otodectes cynotis – Also known as ear mites, these mites are more frequent in cats than dogs and usually only affect the ear region.

Walking Dandruff in Dogs: What Causes It?

This condition is caused by the Cheyletiella mite, which is a kind of mange. Dogs, cats, and rabbits were used as hosts by the Cheyletiella mite that produces walking dandruff, albeit each host has a slightly different type of mite that feeds on it. The Cheyletiella family of mites, as well as their hosts, includes:

  • Cheyletiella blakei is a kind of cat.
  • Cheyletiella parasitivorax is a parasitic fungus found in common rabbits.
  • Volcano rabbits, Cheyletiella romerolagi.
  • Hares Cheyletiella strandtmanni.
  • Cheyletiella yasguri is a kind of bacteria found in dogs.
  • Mites that infect cats and dogs have been observed to jump on human hosts on occasion.

Walking Dandruff in Dogs Diagnosis

When you take your dog to the veterinarian’s office, the appointment will most likely begin with a basic physical examination, during which the movement of parasites on the skin will be discovered in the majority of instances. When the examiner sees the mites and the symptoms they produce, he or she will usually use a flea comb or a piece of tape to capture some of the mites.

In certain circumstances, a sample of the afflicted skin may be taken for cutaneous cytology, which involves examining the skin sample under a microscope. This can assist detect not just which mites are harming your animal, but also how widespread the infection is. When combined with the skin response, the Cheyletiella yasguri mites are often visible moving on the skin with the naked eye and quite straightforward to detect on most skin samples using a microscope.
