Urinalysis is done to evaluate the kidney functions in which low specific gravity of urine is one of the earliest signs of kidney failure. The other sign is proteinuria (protein in urine), so always keep detecting the urine of your dog to detect kidney disease. Whereas the blood reports show almost the condition of all internal organs. But for kidney disease two main terms to be noted, that are waste products present in the blood. So if blood is not properly purified by the kidneys, the levels of waste products get alleviated. These waste products are BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) and Creatinine, both indicating decreased functioning of kidneys. Other parameters that reflect kidney diseases are levels of globulin, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, red and white blood cells count.

When these srotas get vitiated they lead to Mutravaha Srotas Vikara. Causes of Mutra Vaha Srotas Dushti – Drinking water on restricting the urine urge, consumption of food by restricting the urge of urine, excessive intercourse, indulgence in intercourse on restricting urine urge and trauma of Mutravaha Srotas. Pathogenesis of Mutravaha Sroto Dushti: Indulging into causes of Mutra Vaha Srotas Dushti leads to Vata pradhaan tridosha prakopa (aggravation of Vata, pitta and kapha – but mainly Vata dosha). These aggravated dosha accumulated in the mutravaha srotas and led to Mutravaha Vikara.  Common symptoms of Mutravaha Sroto Dushti: Difficulty while passing urination, painful micturition and renal calculi.

1. Gokshura (Tribulus Terrestris)

This is a well known herb for managing Uro-genital disorders. Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis its Treatment by Ayurveda

       Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis

INTRODUCTION

ADEM is one of the demyelinating conditions which involves a severe streak of inflammation in the CNS (Central Nervous System). It includes parts like the spinal cord, brain, and optic nerves sometimes. The swelling occurs on ADEM and damages the myelin sheath thus leading to various symptoms. This condition may follow bacterial, or viral infections and less often the vaccination MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella). ADEM damages the white matter which further leads to neurological symptoms. This condition is sometimes misdiagnosed with the first attack of MS (multiple sclerosis) as the imaging in both the demyelinating condition is the same. Let us now learn more about this disease below.   

SOME FACTS ABOUT ADEM 

  • It is a rare disease that is estimated to affect 1 in 1 lakh 25,000 – 2 lakh 50,000 individuals per year. 
  • The majority of cases may be seen in children (mostly younger than 10 years and less commonly between 10 – 20 years. 
  • In adults, this condition occurs mostly between the ages of 18-82.
  • Male: female ratio is 1.3:1 and more often occurs in the season of spring and winter. 
  • There are some risk factors for ADEM which include genetics, immunization exposure, infectious organisms, and light skin pigmentation.
  • This condition occurs worldwide and is susceptible to all ethnic groups.  
  • Out of all cases of ADEM, 50% to 75% of cases are developed by following any vaccination or infection among which the majority of the cases are led by bacterial or viral infection.  

 CAUSES OF ADEM 

  • The exact cause of ADEM is unknown but most of the clinical diagnoses agree that this condition more likely results from a response of an abnormal immune system against infection or any other trigger.
  • This arises from autoimmune conditions, in which the body’s own natural defense attacks its own healthy tissues by perceiving them as foreign bodies.  
  • Upper respiratory infections are one of the most common causes of ADEM.
  • Specific infections that lead to ADEM are as follows: 
  1. Influenza
  2. Measles
  3. Mumps
  4. Rubella
  5. Varicella-zoster
  6. Epstein Barr virus
  7. Cytomegalovirus
  8. Herpes simplex virus

Less commonly ADEM may occur following any vaccination, some of the vaccinations are mentioned as follows:

  1. Smallpox vaccination
  2. MMR (vaccination for measles, mumps, and rubella) 
  3. Immunization against whooping cough
  4. Immunization against influenza
  • Most rarely the chances of developing ADEM are from an organ transplant.  

SYMPTOMS OF ADEM 

People over 50% experience symptoms within two weeks of the condition and usually a viral or bacterial infection in the upper respiratory tract. The symptoms experienced by a patient of ADEM are written as follows: 

  •  Headache
  •  Fatigue 
  •  Fever
  •  Nausea
  •  Vomiting  
  •  Stiff neck
  •  Balance problems
  •  Drowsiness
  •  Difficulty swallowing

DIAGNOSIS OF ADEM 

The diagnosis of Disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is done by using several different diagnostic techniques. A proper medical and physical history is needed which includes the brain, optic nerves, spine, and peripheral nerves. A clinical diagnosis is done by asking a few questions about the symptoms, any infection history, family history, checking muscle strength, ability to walk, coordination, eye examination, etc. Proper imaging is done for checking any kind of demyelination such as MRI which shows different patterns of demyelination that clears the diagnosis.  

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF ADEM

Differential diagnosis of ADEM includes the following:

  • Multiple sclerosis
