This is hurtful that the mentally challenged persons feel excluded that makes them more sad and worsens their condition. In the text, we shall discuss Somatoform disorder in detail. Ayurvedic aspect and management of Somatoform Disorder

Ayurveda is a traditional medicinal system of India. It is the most ancient medical science whose principles still stand valid and it has been serving mankind from ages and it continues even today. Ayurveda focuses on the diet and style of life a person spends in the management of a disease. Ayurveda has two objectives. One is to observe and keep the health status of a healthy person ‘healthy’ and another one is to treat the diseased person. Ayurveda is based on the three energies or doshas that are vata, pitta and kapha. These doshas when in normal limit define health whereas the derangement results in an advent of a disease.

The exact correlation of somatoform disorder can not be established with any disorder in Ayurveda. But the condition of somatatoform diosrdermarched with the inferior sattva which is an examination point of dashvidha priksha. In Ayurveda, there is a way to determine the patient’s mental and physical build in order to prescribe him a treatment plan or procedure. Therefore, a patient’s examination is done for it. It is called dasvidha priksha. Sattva priksha is one among them which can be correlated with examination of mental faculties. Sattva is the mind and it regulates the body due to its link with the soul, it is generally three types pravara (superior), madhyama (moderate) and avara (inferior). The qualities of avara sattva include inferior type of mental faculties, neither by themself nor by others can sustain their mental strength, in spite of having great and sound physique they cannot be susceptible to fear, greed, ego, delusion and grief. They tolerate pain and odd situations very badly. When they listen to the stories that are fearful, wrathful, terrifying, horrible, hateful and ugly situation or even they come across visions of blood or flesh they can easily fall victim to depression, madness, fainting, giddiness, pallor and stress. (Charak Viman 8/119)

These avara sattva people more easily develop the symptoms of somatoform disorder or in other words these persons are more prone to develop somatoform disorder. The vata dosha being the master of all the neurological and psychological systems finds its involvement in somatoform disorders or they have some sort of indulgence in the rise of somatoform disorder.

Sattvavajaya Chikitsa is one of the main management protocols of all the psychiatric and psychological disorders and cognitive behavioural therapy  and psychotherapy is included in sattvavajaya chikitsa. Conquering the mind is what the word sattvavajaya says .

Use of medhya herbs and those which are used in unmada and apasmara (mental illnesses) management is the mainstay of the management. Herbal medicines such as smritisagar ras, chintamani chaturmukh ras, arogyavardhini vati, brahmi vati, panchagavya ghrita, saraswatarishta, dashamoola kwatha, ashwagandharishta, vat kulantak ras, bhoota bhairav ras, sarpagandha ghan vati, amar sundari vati, balarisht, maha paishachik ghrita, siddharthak ghrita, chandravleha, chyavanaprasha etc are effective in the management of somatoform disorder.

Although the exact cause of Alzheimer’s is unknown, brain studies reveal the plaques. Plaques can be due to tau protein mass or a group of beta-amyloid proteins. Alzheimer’s progresses slowly and symptoms may take time. Patients of Alzheimer’s face problems like dementia, feeling lost and being unable to retain things.
  6.  Vascular dementia – Vascular dementia occurs when there is low blood flow or obstructed blood flow to the brain, it leads to brain damage. Hypertension could be the primary cause which may lead to dementia associated with stress. To improve heart health it is important to lose weight if a person is overweight. High levels of cholesterol and conditions like diabetes may enhance the levels of stress and dementia. People suffering from any such condition must focus on a good lifestyle, and a proper diet, and should stay physically active. Research should be done to know more about this condition. The diet should be good and free from trans fats. A diet that consists of fruits, vegetables, dry fruits, and supplements rich in vitamins should be followed. Ayurvedic Aspect

Manovaha srotas dushti

Manovaha srotas can be designated as the channels of consciousness. The channels of consciousness flow via the mind. Manovaha srotas are important for basic actions and functions like thinking, behavior, remembering, and reasoning. The impaired status of poor functioning of manovaha srotas leads to various symptoms. Srotas are important in Ayurveda because they make up a system of channels that allow the body to function optimally. Manovaha srotas are concerned with Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas gunas. Sattva is clarity, purity, calmness, and harmony. Rajas guna is associated with movement, ambition, activity, motivation, and inspiration. Tamas is associated with dullness, negativity, and lethargy. Balanced states of all three All are beneficial to the mind when in a balanced state. According to the Ayurvedic perspective, Dementia is a vata disorder. Specifically, the Vata dosha associated here is Prana Vata. Aggravated vata dosha leads to abnormal movement of doshas in the body. The vitiation of doshas may cause damage to cells of the brain or their reduced efficiency. All this poor functioning further led to deprived mental health.

Ayurvedic Treatment

Dementia is basically concerned with neurodegeneration. In Ayurveda, Panchkarma and Rasayan therapy can be beneficial to manage the problem of dementia. Rasayan enhances cognitive function. In Ayurveda, buddhi is termed for intelligence, and the buddhi branch is for loss of memory or dementia.  Rasayan therapy involves the rejuvenators like Brahmi, Mandookparni, giloy, etc. These rejuvenators help to promote brain activity and enhance mental stamina and memory. In panchakarma therapy, Shirodhara plays a significant role to manage the stress and anxiety associated with dementia. Also, behavioral therapy is very important to manage panic attacks or stress of the people. The treatment approach for dementia in Ayurveda aims at rejuvenating the brain as well as the whole body and thereby improving brain functions. Complete detoxification of the body can be done by procedures of Panchkarma like Vaman, Virechana, Nasya, Basti, etc. Shirodhara and abhyanga can be helpful to rejuvenate the brain cells. Along with these procedures, ayurvedic herbal medicines can make a difference and manage the issues associated with dementia.
