How to Treat Recurrent Tonsillitis Without Surgery?

ABSTRACT

Tonsils are a set of lymphoid organs present in the human body that reach their largest size in puberty. The tonsils are one of the most immune-competent organs. These usually serve as the first line of defense against inhaled foreign germs and most commonly result in immune responses and common illnesses such as the common cold. Tonsils act as filters, trap the germs that try to enter the system, and make antibodies to fight the infection.

 Recurrent Tonsillitis

INTRODUCTION- WHAT IS TONSILLITIS

When tonsils get overwhelmed by bacteria and viruses, it results in tonsils getting swollen and inflamed which often results in this condition called tonsillitis. This is more common in children and can reoccur over and over again. There are three types of tonsillitis:

1.  Acute tonsillitis: This lasts around a 2 weeks

2. Recurrent tonsillitis: This reoccurs several times a year.

3. Chronic tonsillitis: This is a long-term infection.

The Most Common Causes Of Bacterial Infection Are

  • Bacterial infections such as streptococcus bacteria
  • Viral infection
  • Adenovirus
  • Influenza virus
  • Enterovirus
  • Herpes simplex virus

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms Of Tonsillitis in children and adults include

  • Sore throat
  • Red, swollen tonsils
  • The white-yellowish coating on the tonsils
  • Fever
  • Painful tonsils
  • Scratchy voice
  • Stomachache

TREATMENT

Majorly the treatment includes working on the root cause. Treating the root cause often has good results in acute tonsillitis. Modern medical science offers these two treatments:

1. Medications

Specific medications are used to treat tonsillitis. In the case of bacterial and viral infections, antibiotics and antiviral medications are used. The issue with medications is that it usually gives temporary relief and cases of chronic and recurrent tonsillitis may reoccur.

2. Tonsillectomy

Tonsils are a very important part of our immune system but if the condition of tonsillitis recurs more than seven times in a year or the swollen inflamed tonsils make it difficult for a person to ingest, doctors suggest removal of tonsils and the process is known as tonsillectomy.

Modern medical science has limited options when it comes to tonsillitis, especially recurrent tonsillitis. There is nothing more that we can do except go for a tonsillectomy. Further in this article, we will have a look at what Ayurveda thinks of tonsillitis and what are the ways to treat recurrent tonsillitis without surgery in Ayurveda.

AYURVEDA PERSPECTIVE ON TONSILLITIS

Sushruta Samhita in Ayurveda mentions the condition of tonsillitis as ‘Tundikeri’. Acharya Vagabhata, another ancient Ayurveda scholar has mentioned this disease under the diseases of the throat and Acharya Sushruta has mentioned it under the diseases of the palate. Although it is predominantly a Kapha and Rakta disorder, there is the involvement of vata and pitta in the samprapti (pathogenesis) of Tundikeri. Tonsillitis is a condition where all three doshas are involved. Indulgence in excess cold foods aggravates the Vata and Kapha dosha which further aggravates the condition.

Ayurveda considers this issue arises because of over-processing and over-accumulation of toxins in the body which is why Ayurveda management begins by changing the diet and lifestyle of the person.

The basic line of treatment includes

  • Management of any local swelling or pain.
  • Management of fever and inflammation caused by infection.
  • Dietary and lifestyle management

All the above-mentioned management is possible with various Ayurveda herbs mentioned in ancient Ayurveda classical textbooks. Further in this article, we will discuss the herbs that help in treating chronic and recurrent tonsillitis and may help prevent surgery in recurrent cases.
