Osteopenia Causes, Symptoms and Herbal Treatment

Abstract

Bones are the important parts of our body that make the body skeleton. Many body functions are done through these bones and many internal body mechanisms are carried out by bones and the bone marrow inside them. Bone and bone marrow found inside the bones has the main function in the body’s defense mechanism. Any abnormality in the bones lays to abnormalities in those functionings too. Bone density makes and defines the bone quality, that is necessary for its normal functioning and body posture. It usually begins at the age of 40 to 50 years. Menopausal women are at risk of this bone mineral deficiency. Left untreated conditions have complications that are hard to treat. In this article, we will be discussing various causes that cause loss of bone mineral density and symptoms of this abnormality. We will discuss in detail the ayurvedic medicines for their herbal management.

Osteopenia

Introduction

The low bone mineral density that can cause fracture occurring chances in the body is known as Osteoporosis. Osteopenia should not be understood as a disease rather it is an abnormal symptom that arises due to an abnormality in the body that occurs due to decreasing bone density in your body. Untreated osteopenia condition can lead to more complications and most commonly it causes osteoporosis. The person loses bone mineral mass in this to an extent that can become lower than the normal peak density. This event occurs mainly in increasing age people. Women experiencing menopause are more suspected to suffer from this disease. The bone mass differs from one individual to another individual and the need for the mineral is according to their body’s necessity. A person with osteopenia is at risk of getting a fracture, a little hit, sudden fall, or unintentional trauma could lead to a fracture. General weakness can be seen while the shedding bone mass can lead to un-noticed height loss.

Ayurvedic Aspect

According to Ayurveda, we can correlate this disease to Asthi kshaya. The bones are called asthi in Ayurveda and the decrease in the density of bone is known as kshaya of asthi. The cause for this can be imbalanced vatadi doshas or some other causes that cause dhatus kshaya. Aggravated Vata dosha is the main cause of asthi kshaya, which leads to the weakening of bone tissues, and causes emaciation. Herbal medicines and a good diet is potent to manage this abnormality efficiently, which is discussed further in the article.

AYURVEDIC OVERVIEW

According to Ayurveda, Fibromyalgia is due to the imbalanced state of Vata dosha. Due to mithya ahar and vihar (wrong diet and lifestyle), there is an imbalance of vata dosha and accumulation of ama (toxins) in the body. Aggravated vata cause an imbalance of Pitta and Kaph dosha. Ama gets accumulated in various parts of the body and blocks the channels causing avaran (covering) to various doshas. It results in muscle tenderness, joint pain, stiffness in bones and muscles, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, anxiety, memory loss, etc.

TREATMENT

In Ayurveda management of Fibromyalgia is done through Panchakarma (Bio-cleansing therapy) and Vata Shamak herbs (Vata pacifying herbs).

2. Shirodhara

  • It is a panchkarma procedure in which the patient is allowed to lie in the supine position and medicated liquid is poured into the forehead.

3. Swedana Karam (Sudation therapy)

  • In Swedana Karam steam is passed through various parts of the body so that there is induction of sweat from the body.

4. Basti (Herbal enema)

  • Basti is considered the pradhan chikitsa for Vata imbalance. Herbal decoction or herbal oils both can be used to give an enema.
