Certain inhibitors like anti-tumor necrosis, interferon-alpha, penicillamine, etc. can trigger viral infections which results in chronic muscle inflammatory disorders.

How can Polymyositis be diagnosed?

A part from the symptoms of polymyositis some of the physical and clinical tests that can confirm the disease are

  • Imaging Test-Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Electro Diagnostics-Muscle biopsy and electromyography
  • Clinical Tests- Blood tests to measure muscle enzymes like creatine, kinase, aldolase and for detecting autoantibodies.

Ayurvedic perspective on Polymyositis

According to Ayurveda, polymyositis is caused due to poor digestion resulting in the accumulation of undigested food which ultimately causes deposition of toxins in joints. Indigestion causes an imbalance in Tridosha i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha that leads to slow down the fire elements which causes secretion of sticky end product known as ‘Ama’. Ama triggers autoimmune diseases and causes inflammation, pain, and stiffness in joints.

Gastroparesis and it’s Natural Treatment

What is Gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis, also known as delayed gastric emptying, is a disorder that is caused due to severe vagus nerve injury which helps in the contraction of stomach muscles in order to move through the digestive tract. This condition is a result of the weakening of stomach muscles thus, resulting in irregular contraction of stomach muscles during digestion. According to medical surveys, this chronic disorder affects 10% of men and 40% of women globally.

GASTROPARESIS

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Gastroparesis?

  • Severe abdominal pain and bloating
  • Sudden loss in appetite
  • Fluctuations in blood glucose levels
  • Malnutrition and sudden weight loss
  • Acid reflux
  • Heartburn or Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GRED)
  • Nausea and vomiting due to improper digestion of food
  • Fatigue
  • Blood in vomit
  • Less urination
  • Dizziness
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Irregular bowel movement
  • Dehydration
  • weakness

What are the Leading Causes of Gastroparesis?

Some of the major causes that increase the risk of gastroparesis are discussed as follows-

1. Uncontrolled Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus which is commonly known as “Madhumey” is considered to be the fundamental cause of gastroparesis. Type I diabetes and Type II diabetes damage the pacemaker cells located on stomach walls and vagus nerves, that circulates oxygen and helps our body to absorb essential nutrients. All over this slows down the digestion and causes fluctuations in blood glucose levels.

2. Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is also considered as an underactive thyroid, in which there is low production of thyroid hormones. Depletion in the quantity of thyroid hormones hinders secretory functions of the digestive tract. It affects the gastrointestinal system and motility, which is caused due to accumulation of mucinous material.

3. Scleroderma

Scleroderma is an autoimmune skin disease that is characterized by fibrosis in skin. This causes the depleted blood supply to the nerves which stimulate the bowel movement. Hence, it weakens the gut muscles along with the esophagus and both the intestines.

4. Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is an accelerating disorder that is caused by the degeneration of nerve cells that control body movements. This disease inhibits the movement and co-ordination between muscles in the affected person. It causes constipation or infrequent bowel movements which leads to vomiting, fullness, nausea, bloating, etc. and triggers symptoms of gastroparesis.

Complications

Gastroparesis can Cause Several Complications, such as:

  • Malnutrition
  • Triggers the symptoms of diabetes by increasing blood glucose levels.
  • Dehydration
  • Constipation and digestive disorders leading to Bezoars, the hard solid mass of food.
  • Worsening the quality of life.

Ayurveda and Gastroparesis

According to the Ayurveda, gastroparesis can be treated effectively with natural herbs and some changes in the lifestyle which strengthens the stomach muscles. Gastroparesis or slow digestion is the result of an imbalance in Tridosha i.e. Kapha, Pitta and Vata. This disorder can be cured by three Ayurvedic therapies named Panchkarma, Rasayana, and Shodhna along with herbal remedies and improved diet. It is believed that Mandagni (weak digestion) is the core cause of all the ailments. Moreover, if the digestive system is not functioning smoothly, tends to result in improper assimilation and digestion of the food. Ayurvedic system of medicine provides long-lasting results with no side effects. medications.
