Palmaris Brevis Spasm Syndrome Causes And Treatment By Ayurveda

Abstract

Neurological disorders are disorders that occur due to abnormality in the brain, neurons, nerves, and spinal cord due to structural deformity, damage due to injury, metabolic issues, and other various factors. These factors can result in a number of symptoms including pain, spasms, involuntary contraction and relaxation of the muscles, altered body functions, and others. In Ayurveda, there are three basic doshas, if within normal limits result in a healthy person and vitiation of the same cause diseases. Vata dosha is responsible for all the movements and neurological functions and vitiation of the vata dosha results in diseases related to the neurological system. Palmaris brevis spasm syndrome (PBSS) is also a neurological disorder that affects the palmar brevis muscle. In the following text, we shall see some detail of the condition and also discuss its management in the contemporary system of medicine as well as in the traditional system of the Indian medicinal system of Ayurveda. Let’s discuss it!!Palmaris Brevis Spasm Syndrome

Introduction

Palmaris brevis is a tiny rhomboid-shaped muscle that arises from the transverse carpal ligament and palmar aponeurosis and is inserted into the ulnar border of the palm of the hand and the action of the muscle is to elevate dimpling if the hypothenar eminence. The superficial branch of the ulnar nerve supplies the palmaris brevis muscle. It must be noted that the palmaris brevis muscle is not under voluntary control and its contraction is completely involuntary. Palmaris brevis spasm syndrome (PBSS) is characterized by spontaneous, irregular, and involuntary dimpling or contraction of the palmar brevis muscle. It can be bilateral or unilateral. In Ayurveda, the correlation of the Palmaris brevis spasm syndrome (PBSS) can be best established with vata dosha vitiation. We shall see its details further in this article. Now let’s see the causes, classification, features, management, and Ayurvedic aspect of the condition.

Ayurvedic aspect and management of Palmaris brevis spasm syndrome

  •  Ayurveda is a life science that focuses on the treatment of the disease from its root cause as well as on dietary and lifestyle management. Ayurveda has three basic dosha – vata, pitta, and kapha. All these doshas within normal limits result in a healthy individuality and any type of vitiation among them causes diseases. Vata dosha governs all the neurological functions of the body and all the contractions, relaxations of the muscles, movement of the blood in the vessels, etc. When the vata dosha stays within its normal limits all these functions are normally performed and the vitiation of the vata dosha hampers these processes and results in a number of symptoms including numbness, loss of sensory and motor functions, muscle twitching, irregular contractions and relaxations of the muscles, etc.
  • Palmaris brevis muscle spasm syndrome is a condition that is characterized by the irregular and involuntary contraction of the palmar brevis muscle.  As the contractions and relaxations of the muscles are controlled by the vata dosha and its normalcy these functions properly and vitiation leads to improper and uncoordinated contractions and relaxations. So on this ground, it can be said that the palmaris brevis spasm syndrome is due to the vata dosha vitiation and hence can be considered as a disorder of vata and can be named as vata roga.
  • The management protocol is composed of correcting the vitiated vata dosha which will eventually correct the spasm of the palmaris brevis muscle.
  • Herbs including Erand (Ricinus communis), rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Shalparni (Desmodium gangeticum), Prishniparni (Uraria picta), Brihati (Solanum indicum), Kantakari (Solanum surattense), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Gambhari (Gmelina arborea), Agnimantha (Clerodendrum phlomidis), Patla (Setreospermum suaveolens), shyonak (Oroxylum indicumn) ands bilva (Aegle marmelos), ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), bala (Sida cordifolia) and many other of great help in managing the condition of Palmaris brevis spasm syndrome.

Treatment of Allodynia With Herbal Remedies

Abstract

Allodynia is a rare type of neuropathic nerve pain. It can affect all parts of the body as well as only certain parts. About 15% to 20% of people with neuropathic pain may have allodynia. Allodynia is the phenomenon of a non-painful stimulus producing a sharp pain response, which implies an error in neuronal conduction. It can happen for various reasons, including an injury, surgery, migraine, fibromyalgia, or as a result of nerve damage due to diabetes. This article will discuss it with modern as well as Ayurvedic aspects.

Allodynia

Introduction

Allodynia is defined as pain resulting from a stimulus, such as a light touch of the skin. For example, brushing a feather against the arm causes pain where it should only cause a sensation. It is categorized into three types: Dynamic (or mechanical) when pain results from an object moving across the skin, Thermal which results from mild temperature changes, or Tactile (or static) which results from gentle touch or pressure. There is ultimately an error in the nerve communication network.

Symptoms

Discomfort or pain from the stimulation that normally does not cause pain. Pain can be squeezing pain. Common activities such as washing the face, a few hairs touching the skin, or a breath of air may be painful. It can also feel like having a sunburn or burning sensation all over the body, Anxiety, and Depression. Over time it can hamper a person’s activities and affect their quality of life.

Causes of Allodynia

Commonly it is associated with symptoms of fibromyalgia, diabetes and migraine, and some other disorders.

  • NERVE DAMAGE – When nerves carry pain messages incorrectly, possibly due to a crossover of nerve fibers. There may be increased responsiveness or a malfunction
  • Lack of VITAMIN B and VITAMIN D
  • Overuse of alcohol
  • Trauma
  • Medications such as Opioids or due to chemotherapy

Diagnosis

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

  • Darshan ( Direct perception)
  • Sparshan (Touch perception)
  • Prashan (Questioning)

MANAGEMENT

As per modern, There is no specific treatment for Allodynia only symptomatic management can be done with anticonvulsant tablets and antidepressants, topical Anesthetics containing Lidocaine, and topical creams containing menthol or capsaicin, sometimes these may trigger thermal Allodynia.

Ayurvedic Overview

Ayurved examines the basis of dosha dushya dusti equilibrium of all the three doshas, sapta dhatus and mala lead to healthy body while disturbance of these lead to diseases. So here with respect to the symptoms Allodynia can cause due to dusti of Vatapradhan tridosha dosha and majja dhatu (bone marrow) Allodynia can be frustrating to the patients. However, one can lower the risk of acquiring a condition that causes allodynia and may also pay a relief through ayurveda. Ayurveda is an ancient medicine practice which treats the disease from its root cause.

By including exercise in your routine, regular checkups, maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle, and having a balanced diet, having good sleep and hygiene and herbal medications. Problems of the nervous system are related to the imbalances in the optimal levels of the three Doshas, but primarily it’s the Vata Dosha that’s responsible for the smooth functioning of the nervous system.

Diet

When Vata dosha is not favorable, then the first line of treatment is to eat oily foods that are packed with nutrition. If pitta is associated, try taking foods that can decrease your body temperature such as bitter foods. When Kapha dosha is causing Majja Dhatu issues, then the best alternative is to focus on foods that taste bitter and pungent.  You should consume green leafy vegetables, and light and dry food.

Home remedies

For example ghee, one can either take it by mixing it with food or preparing the food in it or other snehas (unctuous substances) such as taila ,vasa, majja. It helps in bringing the Majja Dhatu to its balanced state. One should consume warm milk which can be the best option but not cold milk. And for better results add spices to the milk to speed up the digestion.

If you have an increased level of Pitta dosha that causes Majja Dhatu problems, then the best line of action is to consume natural sweet-tasting foods and will provide you with the nutrition and nourishment one requires. Bitter-tasting foods can also help in cooling down your body temperature but this must be done carefully and under guidance because too much bitter food can trigger Vata dosha.

When Kapha dosha is causing Majja Dhatu issues, then the best alternative is to focus on foods that taste bitter and pungent.  You should consume green leafy vegetables, light and dry food.

Treatment includes:

  • Counseling of the patient
  • Nidana parivarjan (avoid all causative factors)
  • Samshodhana therapy such as Vamana , virechana , nasya , basti.
  • Other procedures like shirodhara , shirobasti , abhyanga etc
  • Yoga and meditation
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Shaman aushadis such as ashwagandha churna
  • Brahmi vati
