Ayurvedic aspect and Management of Lumpy Skin Disease

Lumpy skin disease is a condition that occurs due to lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) which is a member of the capripoxvirus genus of the poxviridae family. In Ayurveda, there is no text available that refers to the lumpy skin disease in particular. Yejella Shri Ramulu Chaudari had written many books on various aspects of cattle and horses including etiopathogenesis and treatment with Ayurvedic drugs from the year 1928. The books included Pashuvaidyacintamani, Pashuvranachikitsa, Bheshajakalpamu, Svasthavrittamu, Pashuchikitsasaramu etc which are filled with great wisdom of ayurvedic veterinary knowledge.

As there is no direct correlation of the lumpy skin disease but we see this condition with the following view, there is mention of aupsargik (infectious) diseases and janpadodhwans (epidemic/pandemic), so as we see the spread of the disease we can establish its correlation with janpadodhwans.

As the condition is related to the skin therefore we can simply relate it with the rakta and pitta dushti. As the dushti leads to the inflammatory, itching and other skin related issues so the management protocol depends on cleansing the blood that will clear or remove the toxins from the bloodstream that would eventually clears the skin also.

The herbal management is based on killing the virus and pacifying the dosha or cleansing the toxins produced by the infective organisms.

Gandhak Rasayan, Punarnava Mandoor, Giloyghan Vati, Khadirarishta, Arogyavardhini vati, Mahamanjishthadi kwath etc are available formulations that effectively manage the lumpy skin disease.

Herbs including neem (Azadirachta indica), lashun (Allium sativum), tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), haridra (Curcuma longa), marich (Piper nigrum) etc are beneficial in cleansing the blood and fights the toxins produced by the infectious agents.

Ayurvedic Treatment Of Vasculitic Neuropathy With Herbal Remedies

ABSTRACT

Vasculitic neuropathy is a systemic illness which develops eventually after vasculitis. Vasculitis is the inflammation of the blood vessels that can lead to blood vessel occlusion which eventually results in ischemia in the tissues and organs. Ischemia is a condition in which a certain part of the body gets affected due to reduced or restricted blood and oxygen supply to it. When this inflammation reaches the blood vessels that supply peripheral nerves, it causes vasculitis neuropathy. In this article you can get all the information about Vasculitic neuropathy and its Ayurvedic management and treatment.

Vasculitic Neuropathy

INTRODUCTION TO VASCULITIC NEUROPATHY

Vasculitic neuropathy is a peripheral neuropathic condition which results in damage to the blood vessels that supply the nerves. This disease can be either a single organ issue or it can be due to the systemic problem which affects the peripheral nervous system. Vasculitic neuropathy is a serious ailment that can cause prolonged disability and morbidity and hence require medical attention and treatment. It is diagnosed with the help of various tests like electrophysiological test testing, nerve biopsy and blood tests along with clinical examination.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF VASCULITIC NEUROPATHY

As per Ayurveda, Vasculitic neuropathy is caused due to vitiation of tridosha. According to Ayurveda, tridosha, i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are responsible for the maintenance of the health and imbalance of any of these dosha-caused diseases. In case of Vasculitic neuropathy, all of the three doshas are vitiated which cause the signs and symptoms of the ailment.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF VASCULITIC NEUROPATHY

The signs and symptoms of Vasculitic neuropathy depend upon the location of the affected nerve and its type. Usually this ailment results in dysfunction of both the sensory and motor system of the body resulting in various unusual sensations experienced by the patient like pain, numbness, weakness of limbs and its muscles. Most peripheral neuropathies are symmetrical and affect the both sides of the body equally, however this is not the case with Vasculitic neuropathy. In this neuropathy, the affected part can be very asymmetric and one limb is more affected than the other.

CAUSES OF VASCULITIC NEUROPATHY

Vasculitic neuropathy is generally caused due to systemic vasculitis which can affect different organs in the body like lungs, kidneys, skin etc. Some of the conditions which affect the whole body and can lead to Vasculitic neuropathy are Chrug-Strauss syndrome, polyarteritis, microscopic polyangiitis and Wegener granulomatosis. Vasculitic neuropathy can also occur secondary to other inflammatory diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Here the reasons for vascular wall damage are lymphocytes and macrophages.

TYPES OF VASCULITIC NEUROPATHY

Vasculitic neuropathy is of mainly three types, i.e. Primary, secondary and non-systemic.

  1. Primary Systemic Vasculitic Neuropathy – In this case the systemic vasculitis diseases, for example Polyarteritis nodosa, IgA vasculitis etc that have affected different organs in the body move towards the peripheral nervous system.
  2. Vasculitic Neuropathy Secondary to other Disease – Here the patient already suffering from a non systemic vasculitis disease like infection or malignancy, develops vasculitic neuropathy due to the direct effect of the former disease. Such conditions can be like rheumatoid arthritis, dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus etc.
  3. Non-systemic Vasculitic Neuropathy – This is a single organ ailment. It is eliminatory diagnosis which means when no other condition is diagnosed behind the vasculitic neuropathy than a diagnosis of non-systemic vasculitic neuropathy is suggested and made.

DIAGNOSIS OF VASCULITIC NEUROPATHY

Diagnosis of Vasculitic neuropathy is majorly made with the help of medical history, physical examination, and certain laboratory examinations. Tests like skin biopsies, electromyography, muscle and nerve biopsies are done for evaluating the condition.

TREATMENT OF VASCULITIC NEUROPATHY

Conventional treatment of Vasculitic neuropathy depends upon the underlying condition which is causing the vasculitis and eventually leading to Vasculitic neuropathy. As usually the underlying condition is an autoimmune disorder, hence immunomodulatory therapies are given. Mainly the corticosteroids are used to treat Vasculitic neuropathy, which in the long term can cause various complications.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR VASCULITIC NEUROPATHY

As the cause mentioned in Ayurveda is aggravation or vitiation of the tridosha, i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha and it is the causative factor. So the Ayurvedic treatment aims at balancing these doshas with the help of herbal remedies naturally.
