Eosinophilic Lung Disease/Pulmonary Eosinophilia & Its Ayurvedic Aspect

ABSTRACT

Every cell of the body requires an appropriate amount of oxygen to function properly. The demand of oxygen is fulfilled by the circulation of blood. The inhaled air contains oxygen, etc, which is processed into the bloodstream by the lungs. Hence, proper functioning of the lungs is very essential for proper functioning of the body cells. Any abnormality in the structure or functioning of the lungs will lead to the presentation of a variety of difficulties or abnormalities in the body. One such abnormality that adversely affects the lungs is eosinophilic lung disease or pulmonary eosinophilia. This condition will be described in detail along with its ayurvedic perspective in the following article.

Eosinophilic Lung Disease

INTRODUCTION

Eosinophilic lung disease is a group or category of lung diseases arising due to the increased levels of eosinophilia in the lungs.Eosinophilia is a term that refers to the increased levels of eosinophils. Eosinophils are a component of our blood, more specifically, the component of white blood cells. The main aim of these components is to fight off the infections. The eosinophils play a very vital role in the mechanism of the immune system. In cases of infection, we observe a raised number of the eosinophil count. When there are too many eosinophils in the lung, it causes inflammation and can disrupt the normal functioning of the lungs. There are eosinophils built up in the air spaces of the lungs, hence arising various difficulties which will be described later in this article. There can be various forms of this condition such as-

  • Acute condition – The acute state of eosinophilic lung disease is categorised when there is presentation of severe symptoms often, appearing suddenly, usually within a week.
  • Transient condition – This state can be categorised by an on and off condition. The symptoms may appear and disappear.
  • Chronic condition – The chronic condition is when the symptoms last for a longer duration of time, as long as upto or more than a month.

CAUSES OF EOSINOPHILIC LUNG DISEASE

There could be various causes underlying the condition of eosinophilic lung disease which may vary from person to person. The most common causes could be an infection, allergic reaction, etc. It could also be a result of a reaction to some drugs such as anti inflammatory drugs or antibiotics, etc. In some cases, there is no known cause of the appearance of this disease. The symptoms of the condition of eosinophilic lung disease will be described as follows.

SYMPTOMS OF EOSINOPHILIC LUNG DISEASE

The symptoms of Eosinophilic lung disease will vary from patient to patient and will depend on a variety of factors. The most commonly observed symptoms will be various breathing related difficulties such as dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing), wheezing, cough, etc. The patient may also have other symptoms such as fever, coughing up blood or mucus, etc. He/she may also experience various muscular aches. The diagnosis of Eosinophilic lung disease will require some diagnostic tests which will be discussed as follows.

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT FOR EOSINOPHILIC LUNG DISEASE

Various tests or techniques that will help to diagnose the condition of eosinophilic lung disease will require chest X- ray, CT scan, lung biopsy, lung function test, etc. Evaluation of lung fluid will also be done to confirm the diagnosis. As soon as the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment should be started. The line of treatment will include administration of various medicines such as corticosteroids which will help to reduce the inflammation in the lungs. If the condition is not managed by the medicines, full intensive care support may also be required to stabilise the condition. The ayurvedic perspective will be discussed as follows.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT ON EOSINOPHILIC LUNG DISEASE

The condition of eosinophilic lung disease can be considered as a result of prana veh srotas dushti. The unhealthy lifestyle, diet and various dosha vitiating factors can lead to the vitiation of the kapha dosha that will further lead to the presentation of various symptoms. The vitiated kapha dosha along with the other vitiated dosha get accumulated in the prana vaha srotas and lead to various breathing-related difficulties. This condition can be coped up using natural ayurvedic compounds such as tulsi capsules, respi support capsules, aller g care capsules, etc. These will be described as follows.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy

ABSTRACT

Limb Girdle muscular dystrophy is a group of diseases that causes weakness and wasting of the muscles commonly seen in arms and legs. Muscular System is an organ system consisting of skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles. Muscular System permits the various movements, maintains the posture and circulates the blood throughout the body. There are 3 distinct types of muscles such as skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, non striated muscle. Usually muscles provide strength, balance and heat to keep the body warm. There are 650 muscles in the human body, and made up of elastic tissue and small muscle fibers, each muscle fiber consists of tiny strands called fibrils which control the contraction of muscle fiber.

A tendon is a piece of connective tissue that connects muscle to a bone and when muscle is contracted it is pulled against the skeleton and creates a movement. The cells of cardiac muscles are X and Y shaped which are tightly connected by a special junction known as intercalated disk, they are finger-like projections. In this topic we are going to discuss its causes, symptoms and its ayurvedic management in detail further in this topic.

INTRODUCTION

Limb Girdle muscular dystrophy is a genetically heterogeneous group of muscular disease which is characterized by progessive wasting mainly affects hip and shoulder joints. It usually has an autosomal pattern of inheritance. In muscular dystrophy there are abnormal genes that interfere with the production of proteins which are needed to form a healthy muscle. This weakness and damage is due to lack of the protein known as dystrophin and deficiency of this protein causes problems in walking, swallowing, and in coordination in muscles.

It commonly affects all the sexes, the most common type is Duchenne and Becker dystrophy which is common in men. In the early stages limb girdle muscular dystrophy there is unusual Gait and makes running difficult. Muscle wasting may change in posture and in appearance of shoulder, arm, back. Weak shoulders tend to make shoulder blade sticks out and make scapular wings. In rare cases developmental delay and disability are seen in this disorder.
