Natural Cure For Lactose Intolerance

ABSTRACT

“Mother, can I have some Makhan” when lord Krishna used to say in the cartoon and the way he ate it, enjoying every bit, made our mouths water too. Dairy products are one of the inseparable food supplements of day-to-day existence. When we travel around the world, why talk about the world? Our country India, which is a mini world in itself, finds the use of dairy products in a wide range.

Dairy products especially milk have been used by humans since the beginning of recorded time and are provided as both fresh and preservable nutritious foods. In some countries, half the milk produced is consumed as fresh pasteurized whole, low-fat, or skim milk. However, maximum milk is manufactured into more durable dairy products of worldwide commerce, such as butter, ghee, cheese, ice cream, and so on.

LACTOSE-INTOLERANCE

BENEFITS OF DAIRY PRODUCTS

Dairy products are very nutritious and provide bioactive components. It supports the development of lymphoid tissues and the establishment of symbiotic microflora. The potency, importance, and quantity of milk bioactive compounds are possibly more than the old consideration. They comprise certain specific organic acids, vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, carbohydrates, magnesium, zinc, protein, oligosaccharides, and so on. These components are beneficial in the development of the overall stature of a human.

According to Ayurveda dairy supplements are very useful and are used in medications. Milk which is referred to as ksheera is useful in pacifying Vata and pitta, is restorative, regenerative, and increases Ojas. Ghee is another form of milk product that enhances intellect, memory, digestive fire, strength, etc. When it is processed with appropriate medicine, it enhances its curative power. The potency of ghee increases with time, old ghee is used in curing intoxication, epilepsy, diseases affecting the head, ears, and gynecological apparatus. Butter, another product, is aphrodisiac, which pacifies Vata, pitta, and rakta. Dairy products have a lot of beneficial effects and find a wide range of use in Ayurvedic treatments.

When we talk about the different types of carbohydrates present in these products, one of the commonly heard saccharides which comes to our head is lactose. It is considered prebiotic and stimulates the growth of good bacteria in the gut. But as we hear about lactose intake, it draws our attention to a condition called lactose intolerance.

WHAT IS LACTOSE INTOLERANCE

Lactose intolerance is a condition in which the body is unable to break down lactose. It occurs due to deficiency of the enzyme lactase secreted by the small intestine and as a result, undigested lactose reaches the large intestine and causes bloating of the stomach, gas, and diarrhea.

Lactose intolerance is not a serious condition but can cause a lot of unpleasantness. It is of three types:

  • Primary lactose intolerance: It is the common type, caused as a result of aging. With aging the production of lactase may decrease as a result the individual develops intolerance towards it.
  • Secondary lactose intolerance: It is caused due to certain intestinal diseases such as celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Even injury to the small intestine can cause this condition.
  • Congenital lactose intolerance: It is a condition that occurs rarely. In this, the infant inherits the defective gene from the parents. The baby becomes intolerant to breast milk and if not treated earlier can lead to threatening conditions.

The symptoms of this condition can be mild to severe. It depends on the amount of lactase an individual’s body produces.

LET’S KNOW WHAT AYURVEDA HAS TO SAY

Ayurveda correlates lactose intolerance to the conditions occurring in grahani. It can be vataja, pittaja, kaphaja, and sannipataja.

Lactose intolerance is the inability of the body to digest it, which means the agni in the body is affected. Agnimandya is caused by the kaphaja condition. It happens due to the intake of kapha vridhi products and dairy products are kapha vridhikara.

The intensity of Agni decreases drastically and becomes mandagni and makes the digestive power weak and thus not enabling the body to digest the milk products.

HOW TO REDUCE EFFECTS OF LACTOSE INTOLERANCE

Dairy products are people’s favorite but reducing the use of these products can only be the means through which this can be tackled. By trying the trial and error method, they can get to know the amount of lactose they can intake in the form of these supplements. Rather than using whole milk, one can use skim milk or low-fat milk. Milk can be taken along with other meals as it slows the time of digestion and therefore it helps the enzyme to act.

To meet the requirements, these products can be taken through leafy green vegetables, broccoli, egg, cereals, juices, etc.

Probiotics are living organisms that are present in our intestines that help in maintaining a healthy digestive system. These are available as active or “live” cultures in some yogurts and as supplements in the capsule form, so having these as a part of the diet can help in the digestion of lactose.

AYURVEDIC REMEDY FOR LACTOSE INTOLERANCEM

Fed up with a bloated stomach and gastric problems!!! Let’s find a cure in our Indian medicine.

In Ayurveda, lactose intolerance can be related to grahani rogam. It believes that by practicing certain regimes, he or she can overcome this condition. It mainly focuses on correcting the digestive power. Problems related to this can only be tackled by correcting the digestion. The Kapha causing agnimandya in the body has to be reduced and pitta dosha has to be enhanced. And thus enabling proper digestion.

Certain herbs that can be taken in the management of grahani roga are Hareetaki (Terminalia Chebula), Haridra (Curcuma Longa), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Patha (Cissampelosa pareira), Musta(Cyperus rotundus), etc. These herbs have the property that increases the Agni.

Certain treatment procedures for lactose intolerance are Virechana and Vamana, by doing so the polluted doshas in the body can be eliminated, and the digestive fire can be rekindled.
