In today’s article we are going to discuss one such condition that affects the Brain health, PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy). So let’s have a look!!!!

INTRODUCTION

PML means Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy, one of the diseases of CNS (Central Nervous System). In this condition a virus attacks the cells that are responsible for making myelin. Myelin is the coating that protects the nerve fibers of the Brain. PML can affect any part of the body, occurs rarely but is a life threatening condition. In Europe and the United States combined each year a total 4000 people suffer from PML. This condition gets worse over time passage and leads to serious complications. Further let’s discuss its causes, risk factors, symptoms and Ayurvedic View. So let’s have a look!!!!!

PML Virus

FACTS ABOUT PROGRESSIVE MULTIFOCAL LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY

Following are some facts that one must know about PML before discussing this condition in detail

  • It is a condition which affects Brain and is caused by a virus.
  • The condition is rare but progressive.
  • Mainly DMARDs and Multiple Sclerosis increase its risk factor of development.
  • As per Ayurveda this condition is correlated to Agantuk Janya Vata Vyadhi.
  • The main thing to get rid of this condition or to prevent this condition is enhancing the immunity.

CAUSES AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF PROGRESSIVE MULTIFOCAL LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY

PML is mainly caused by a viral infection named as JC Virus (John Cunningham Virus). PML is rare but this viral infection is common that is upto 85% of the adults can have this infection. JC virus can adapt at any age, at any time of the life but commonly affects in the childhood. This Virus mainly lodged in the lymph nodes, kidneys or bone marrow throughout our lifetime. Only a few people with JC Virus can get PML. If someone has JC Virus and the immune system gets severely compromised only then there is a chance of developing PML. so it is a must to take care of your immunity once you get to know about the JC Virus. If once it gets reactivated, reaches to the Brain, multiplies and starts to attack myelin. After the damage of myelin sheath a scar tissue starts forming, known as demyelination. It leads to the lesions that result from the interference of electrical impulses that travel from the Brain to other body parts, which leads to a variety of symptoms in different body parts.

RISK OF DEVELOPING PROGRESSIVE MULTIFOCAL LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY

PML occurs rarely if you have a healthy and boosted immune system. This condition only develops when the immune system gets compromised. Following are some other risk factors of developing PML:

  • HIV-AIDS
  • Leukaemia
  • Lymphoma
  • Hodgkin’s disease
  • Various cancerous conditions
  • Long term consumption of immunosuppressive therapy and corticosteroids
  • Autoimmune conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Crohn’s Disease, etc.
  • It can be caused by a side effect of various drugs such as – Dimethyl Fumarate, Natalizumab, Fingolimod, etc.

SYMPTOMS OF PROGRESSIVE MULTIFOCAL LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY

As long as the John Cunningham Virus remains inactive, one must not be aware about it. Once the virus gets activated PML causes great damage to the myelin which makes it hard for the Brain to send proper messages to other body parts. Symptoms of PML depends upon where the lesions are formed and the severity depends upto which extent the damage is caused. Initially the symptoms resemble the symptoms of pre-existing conditions like multiple sclerosis or HIV – AIDS. the symptoms of PML are as follows:

  • Clumsiness issues
  • General weakness
  • Sensory loss
  • Changes to vision
  • Facial drooping
  • Difficulty using legs and arms
  • Loss of language skills
  • Personality changes
  • Mental slowness
  • Memory problems

As the time passes these symptoms lead to various complications such as seizures, dementia, coma, etc. and PML will become a serious and life-threatening medical emergency.

DIAGNOSIS OF PROGRESSIVE MULTIFOCAL LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY

The physician may access PML based on progressive journey of symptoms, pre existing conditions and the medications one is  taking. The diagnostic test that may confirm PML includes the below techniques:

  • Blood tests: Detects the high levels of antibodies.
  • Lumbar Puncture: This sample also consists of antibodies if you have PML.
  • Brain biopsy: It detects the lesion forming in the myelin sheath.
  • Imaging tests: CT Scan or MRI detect the lesions occurring in the white matter of the Brain.

AYURVEDIC VIEW OF PROGRESSIVE MULTIFOCAL LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY

Ayurveda is a holistic science serving mankind for more than 3000 years. This science is working with the aim of maintaining the health of the healthy person and to alleviate the health concern of the diseased person. As we read earlier this condition affects the Brain and comes under Neurological conditions which are considered as Vata Vyadhi. Also the cause of this condition is JC virus which can be taken as Agantuk karana. So PML as per Ayurveda is a Vataj Vyadhi caused by Agantuk karana.

Vata Dosha is one among the three Doshas and it acts as a primary force beyond all body activities. Even it controls the activities of pitta and kapha dosha as well. If Vata dosha gets disturbed then all the body events will get disturbed and leads to many diseases known as Vata Vyadhi or neurological disorders.

वातेन जनितो व्याधि: वात व्याधि:।। (मा. नि. २२)

According to Madhava Nidaan diseases caused by Vata dosha are known as Vata Vyadhi.

Common Causative factors of Vata Vyadhi

  • Dry food, cold food, food intake in less amount, foods that are light to digest, awakening at night for a long time, excessive bleeding, depletion of tissues, trauma, injury to vital points.

Pathogenesis of Vata Vyadhi:

देहे स्त्रोतांसि रिक्तानि पूरयित्वा अनिलो बली।

करोति विविधान्‌ व्याधीन्‌ सर्व अङ्ग एक अङ्ग संश्रयान्‌।। (च. चि २८).

In this shloka this is explained that vata dosha get aggravated due to the above mentioned causative factors and get situated in rikta sthana (susceptible or empty channels), producing various vataj disorders. PML is also one of the Vata Vyadhi which is caused by Agantuk karana as we discussed earlier. Now we are going to discuss the Herbal Remedies by Planet Ayurveda that helps in managing the condition of PML.

Vestibular Hypofunction Causes, Symptoms, and Herbal Treatment

ABSTRACT

Ears are one of the paired organs in our body, which helps in first of all hearing and then balancing. There are many conditions that can affect ears and hamper its functioning. When sound waves launch into the ear canal the eardrum (tympanic membrane) vibrates. Vibration shifts to the ossicles and amplifies. These soundwaves then transmit into the inner ear. There are tiny hair cells inside that send electrical waves up to the Brain and make one hear that voice. How the ears help in balancing, the inner ear consists of semicircular canals that are filled with hair like sensors and fluid. When one moves the head that fluid moves the hair cells in the canal. Then it transmits the information with the vestibular nerve, then the Brain passes signals to the body to stay balanced. So if there is deformity in the ear system one may suffer from various hearing and balance issues. About one such balancing issue we are going to discuss in this given article that is Vestibular Hypofunction. So let’s have a look!!!!!

INTRODUCTION

Varun Dhawan, a famous Bollywood Actor was recently diagnosed with Vestibular Hypofunction. He said that I just shut down, my balance goes off, but I am pushing myself hard. As we are in this running world and there is a great purpose why we are here in this world. So I am trying to search for mine and you must have to go searching for your own. Vestibular Hypofunction means when the inner ear part of the balance system is not working properly. The vestibular system is situated in the inner ear and helps in maintaining body balance along with the muscles and eyes. When this system is not working properly then it sends wrong messages to the Brain and a person will feel dizziness and vertigo. These disorders can occur at any age but most commonly it affects the old age people. The ear consists of a complex system of cartilages and bones and within it there is a network of canals  that are known as semicircular canals which are filled with fluid. This whole system assists in maintaining the balance of the body, if it gets disturbed it leads to Vestibular Hypotension. Let’s discuss this disease in detail as below!!!
