About ECG and TMT test & How can Ayurveda help you heal your heart

Why did your doctor recommend you an ECG and a TMT test? And how can Ayurveda help you heal your heart!

Surveys and statistics, all around the globe validates the fact that heart diseases are increasing at an alarming rate, that too regardless of age. Teen, young or middle-aged, people you know suffer from a heart condition or a precursor of cardiovascular issues i.e., metabolic disorders. Inactivity and immense stress induced upon us by the pandemic didn’t help the situation but accelerated it. Along with the rise of regular customers in online food delivery apps, we saw a rise in metabolic disorders in the last two years. Along with the genetic tendency for these diseases passed on from our parents, these triggers induce metabolic disorders regardless of age.

Now if you happen to be a person who experienced unusual symptoms like chest pain (angina) with or without pain radiating to the arms, which is considered to be a direct warning in case of heart disease, you may have visited a general physician or a cardiologist. The doctor would ask for signs and symptoms that suggest a heart issue and check if the rhythm of your heartbeat shows any abnormality. For confirmation, the doctor will recommend some tests. Two of those tests are ECG (Electrocardiogram) and TMT (Treadmill test).

ECG AND TMT

What is an ECG?

An electrocardiogram or ECG/EKG is a diagnostic test that detects cardiac abnormalities by analyzing the electrical impulses generated by the heart as it contracts. The patient is wired up to an electrocardiograph (ECG) device through three electrical leads (one to each wrist and the third to the patient’s left ankle), which is used to monitor the heart’s functioning and rhythm. The ECG consists of peaks and dips termed as waves. The wave pattern can be used to determine the pace and pattern of our heartbeat. This is typical ECG testing.

Are ECG and TMT the same?

There are 3 types of ECG, a treadmill test or cardiac stress test is one of them. A normal ECG is called Resting ECG, and continuous monitoring of the heart’s rhythm is called ambulatory ECG which is done by using a Holter monitor for 24 to 48 hours in case of intermittent cardiac arrhythmias which happens unpredictably and not always present, which make it difficult to be seen in a normal ECG.

A treadmill test is a process of recording cardiac impulses during strenuous physical activity. The heart beats harder and demands more blood to operate during exercise. If there is an underlying constriction of the heart arteries that are lowering the quantity of blood reaching the heart, changes will be seen on the graph. Besides these changes, patients may develop chest discomfort. This is typically a sign of underlying cardiac artery problems.

How is the treadmill test done?

  • As the first step, the patient’s chest must be exposed for the ECG leads to be placed on it. Men’s chests must be shaved so that the leads may be securely attached to the skin of the chest. Women will need to remove their undergarments for leads to be placed to their chests inside their gown.
  • Blood pressure will be recorded in both lying and standing positions before the test. The test will not be conducted on a person with abnormal blood pressure.
  • You will be given a brief explanation of how to run or walk or climb on the treadmill, and once the doubts are cleared, the electrodes are attached and the test is done.
  • The pace is initially slow and then raised gradually. If the test is to be done on an inclined treadmill, the inclination is also applied gradually.
  • Every 3 minutes or so, the doctor will record your blood pressure.
  • If you experience any kind of chest discomfort or exhaustion, or the physician thinks it’s enough time duration or notices a change in the ECG waves or BP, the test will be stopped.
  • Then final blood pressure is recorded and you can rest after getting dressed up.

What can your doctor find out from these tests?

ECG:

  1. cardiac abnormalities affecting the conducting (electrical) system
  2. Arrhythmia – abnormal/irregular heartbeat
  3. Coronary occlusion – blockages in the arteries of the heart
  4. Pericarditis
  5. Myocarditis
  6. Abnormal alignments of heart
  7. Previous heart attacks

TMT:

  1. Can diagnose stable angina (intense chest pain induced by emotional stress or strenuous physical activity)
  2. Can confirm coronary artery diseases
  3. Cardiac arrhythmia
  4. Confirmatory test for cardiac health before major surgeries
