ABSTRACT

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is an associated condition with the virus of chicken pox that is varicella zoster virus. This virus is responsible for two conditions in the body that are chickenpox and shingles. This virus is even present in the body once varicella (chicken pox) alleviates. It leads to various conditions such as bacterial and viral pneumonia, encephalitis (brain infection) and even kidney problems. Ramsay Hunt Syndrome

INTRODUCTION

Ramsay hunt syndrome is a condition leading from an outbreak of shingles which affects the facial nerve just located near to the ears. This condition leads to facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear. The virus responsible for ramsay hunt syndrome is the same as that of chickenpox. Once the condition of chickenpox gets alleviated the virus is still remaining in the nerves and after years the virus gets reactivated and if so then it attacks on the facial nerves. Now let’s discuss the causes and symptoms of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

CAUSES OF RAMSAY HUNT SYNDROME

This condition may occur in anyone who gets affected from chickenpox once in a lifetime. The cause is just the chickenpox virus but here are some risk factors that may lead to Ramsay Hunt Syndrome if come in contact with persons like:

  • Who’s never had chickenpox
  • Who’s never had chickenpox vaccine
  • One with low immune system
  • Pregnant women

SYMPTOMS OF RAMSAY HUNT SYNDROME

The major symptoms through which we can say it is a Ramsay Hunt Syndrome are:

  1. Fluid filled blisters with painful red rash in, on and around 1 ear.
  2. Facial weakness on affected side
  3. Paralysis on affected side

Most often facial paralysis and rash occur at the same time but some of the time both may occur on different times and some of the time the rash may not occur. If someone have this syndrome then one may experience the following symptoms:

  • Hearing loss
  • Pain in affected ear
  • Ringing in the ear
  • Vertigo
  • Difficulty closing the eye of affected side
  • Loss of taste

Abstract

Stargardt Disease

Introduction

Stargardt disease is a rare genetic and progressive eye disease which results in vision loss. Macula is the part of the eye that is responsible for central, sharp vision and in this condition macula is affected. In case of Stargardt disease, lipofuscin occurs, i.e. accumulation of fatty yellow pigment. This lipofuscin occurs in the cells of the macula which causes vision loss. People suffering from this condition can also have problems with night vision and color vision. The signs and symptoms of the condition usually start in childhood and worsen going to adulthood. Stargardt disease is a genetic condition where abnormal mutations in certain genes lead to the condition.

Ayurvedic Aspect of Stargardt Disease

Causes of Stargardt Disease

Vitamin A is used by our body to make the layer of tissues that is light sensitive at the back of the eye (in retina). Then the gene mentioned, i.e. ABCA4 works to make a protein that cleanses up the leftover fatty material. But in case of the Stargardt disease this gene does not work at all leading to deposition of the fatty material on the macula that destroys the central vision by killing light sensitive cells and causing loss of vision. This disease is an inherited genetic condition which means it is passed to children from parents.

Diagnosis of Stargardt Disease

When you contact an eye doctor, he/she will go for the detailed case history and thorough physical examination. The examination done is called dilated eye exam which is completely painless and done by pouring some eye drops that will widen the pupil of the patient and then your doctor will check for the signs of the disease, the main feature that will be evident is yellowish deposits on the macula.
